Bhumipujan of ‘Public Plaza’ under the New Kalanagar Flyover

Mumbai, 3rd November, 2021 : The bhumipujan of the ‘Public Plaza’ under the New Kalanagar Flyover was performed today by the august hands of Shri Aaditya Thackeray,  Hon. Minister, Tourism and Environment, Maharashtra, Shri Zeeshan Siddiqui, Member of the Legislative Assembly, Maharashtra, along with Shri S.V.R. Srinivas IAS, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA and other dignitaries.

MMRDA is reshaping the Kalanagar Junction, being an important Node of the City as a part of refurbishment of Western Express Highway. In order to utilize the space under the flyover efficiently and to avoid the misuse of the space below the flyover, a Public Plaza was proposed by MMRDA Urban Designing Cell. The plaza ad-measuring 2828 sq.m, will be +0.3 m high raised paved plaza accessible by ramps on both the sides and will consist of several design elements:

          Light Art Sculpture, an aesthetical design element placed at the starting point of the plaza highlighting the entry to the BKC Art District.

          Linear Water body with series of descending heights of fountains.

          Planter beds / Flower beds planted with shade loving shrubs around the water bodies.

          Benches / Seating at an appropriate  distance  along the water body and around the flyover pier.

Shri Aaditya Thackeray, Hon. Minister, Tourism and Environment, at the Bhumipujan said, “We had a District Planning Committee, wherein we decided to undertake the Urban beautification and enhancement of Suburban Mumbai similar to the work undertaken in Worli and other areas in South Mumbai. With MMRDA’s endeavours, we wish to create more such areas to improve the surroundings in and around the BKC-Kalanagar  junction. I wish MMRDA the best for the project.”

Shri S.V.R. Srinivas IAS, Metropolitan Commissioner said at this occasion, “MMRDA’s Urban Design Cell aspires to utilize the leftover space below the flyover for enhancement and beautification of the area. These leftover spaces when converted into recreational area, will work as an effective public space and will be a catalyst for overall development of the city.”
