Danfoss’ Chennai Campus has been awarded LEED Zero Water certification by Green Business Certification Inc. (‘GBCI’).


  • Over a 12-month period, LEED Zero Certification recognizes buildings that use zero potable water. The certification verifies net zero goals and the certification signals market leadership in the built environment.

Chennai:  Green Business Certification Inc., (GBCI)  announced, Danfoss’ Chennai facility as the newest recipient of the LEED Zero Water Certification on the occasion of ‘World Water Day’. Gopalakrishnan P, Managing Director, GBCI – South East Asia and MENE Markets conferred the award to Dangfoss India in the presence of Ravichandran Purushothaman, President Danfoss India, Deepa Sathiaram, Executive Director, En3 Sustainability Solutions and senior leadership of Danfoss India. Over a 12-month period, LEED Zero Water Certification recognizes buildings that use zero potable water. The certification verifies net zero goals and the certification signals market leadership in the built environment. As part of its efforts to be self-sufficient, Danfoss has taken steps to ensure that most of the water requirements for its buildings and processes are met by capturing rainwater and treating it so that they no longer rely on water from the local govt. sources.

The LEED Zero is the new standard for global cities, communities, and buildings as they strive to achieve a sustainable future. In LEED Zero Water, a balance is maintained between total potable water consumption and total alternative or recycled water use. This achievement is significant, Danfoss Chennai Campus is the second Industrial Manufacturing project in India and third globally to have received the LEED Zero Water Certification. For Danfoss, reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions from new and existing buildings is a priority.

Speaking on the occasion, Ravichandran Purushothaman, President- Danfoss India Region said, "We place sustainability at the heart of everything we do. Water being a critical resource, it is heartening for us to share that our Danfoss Chennai campus is now water-sufficient and has earned the prestigious LEED ZERO water certification, which stands testament to our sustainability commitments. This feat was possible due to our conscious efforts in harnessing & conserving water such as rainwater capture, ZLD process, ETP/STP plants on campus and IoT based close monitoring & conservation of water distribution & usage. Falling closer to Danfoss India's Silver Jubilee this month, this is an achievement which we are proud of, as only a handful of campuses in India have managed this. Special thanks to LEED Zero Water Certification, who supported us throughout this journey."

Danfoss Chennai campus is spread overs 50-acres and is an IMS accredited (14001:2015& 45001:2018) facility. This LEED Platinum rated manufacturing campus has achieved an average 12K+ tons of Co2 reduction per annum in the last 2 years alone through various sustainability measures like 12.5 MW Solar power plant, 275 KW/ Hr Energy storage system, dependency on renewables, 3600 KL Rainwater harvesting pond, loT based Water monitoring and consumption, Zero liquid discharge, 10K+ trees on campus especially through Miyawaki forest, use of Danfoss' own Energy efficiency products and solutions amongst many others.

In line with the Danfoss’ vision of going carbon neutral across all its global campuses by 2030, especially in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, the Chennai facility has clear action plan in place for reduced carbon footprint. Danfoss’ onsite facility management team have been innovative in their approach to reduce the usage of freshwater by implementing water-efficient technologies which maximizes usage of recycled water and also generate alternative sources of water. LEED Zero Water Certification is yet another milestone which validates Danfoss’ position as a responsible organization in its commitment towards sustainability and water conservation.
