New Delhi, August 1, 2019: Regular Oral Hygiene routine plays a vital role in preventing many diseases and maintaining the overall physical health. However, lack of awareness, proper information and a casual attitude, often leads to many complicated issues related to periodontal and oral health. Keeping this in mind, the Department of Periodontology, School of Dental Sciences, Sharda University organized a special camp ahead of the National Oral Hygiene Day on 1st August, to educate, motivate and inform the general population about the importance of oral hygiene, A week long celebrations, commencing from 25th July were also conducted to commemorate the birth anniversary of the doyen of Indian Periodontics and Founder of the Indian Society of Periodontology (ISP) - Dr G.B. Shankwalkar.
Good oral and dental hygiene can help prevent bad breath, tooth decay and gum disease—and helps keep the teeth stronger even as one gets old. An unhealthy mouth, especially in case a person is suffering from a gum disease, may increase the risk of serious health problems such as heart attack, stroke, poorly controlled diabetes and preterm labor. As part of the special Oral Health camp, around 600 patients were screened and counseled on oral health care and the correct brushing techniques. They were also provided with free mouth wash samples.
School of Dental Sciences, Sharda University is committed to the mission of “Oral Health for All by 2020” that aims to spread awareness regarding the importance of oral health and curb the attitude of neglect which is one of the major causes for dental diseases. For a period of one week, the patients visited the School of Dental Sciences at Sharda University to avail the offer for free scaling and 50% discount on all periodontal procedures (Gum treatment).
Prof (Dr.) M. Siddharth, Dean, School of Dental Science, Sharda University said, “The Oral Hygiene Week celebrations align with the Department’s vision of optimal oral healthcare for all, focusing on enhancing the overall well-being by understanding the correlation between oral health and sound physical health.”
He further added, “Good oral health means much more than just having good teeth and a nice smile - it is critical for good general health and the overall well-being as teeth are important for good nutrition, proper digestion, language development and self-esteem.”
In addition to the check-up sessions, events were organized for students and facilities to showcase their talent and convey the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene through various performing arts.
