Jaya Bhattacharya on Diwali: I used to enjoy bursting crackers, but that changed once I began working with animals

Jaya Bhattacharya, known for her impactful role as Urmila in Chhathi Maiyya Ki Bitiya, shares her cherished memories and personal reflections on celebrating Diwali. With a deep-rooted love for tradition, Jaya emphasises Diwali’s significance, blending nostalgia with a heartfelt call for mindful celebrations that focus on love, positivity, and harmony with nature.
Reflecting on Diwali’s importance, Jaya Bhattacharya said, “Lighting diyas and illuminating the whole house is the best part of Diwali for me. Being a Bengali, we also celebrate Kali Puja on this day, so it’s a double celebration for us. When I was in Lucknow, our Diwali preparations included kheel, lava, lai, batashas, and sweet potato toys. I don’t find all of those items here, but whatever I can find, I buy for Diwali and offer to Mother Lakshmi.”
Recalling childhood memories of the festival, the Chhathi Maiyya Ki Bitiya actress shared, “As a child, I was only allowed to burst phuljharis or pencil sparklers, as I was the only child and my parents were very protective. Even though I’d buy mirchis, bombs, and anars, my parents would always hand them over to the boys in the neighbourhood to burst for me. I hated it and resented those boys for lighting my crackers! One Diwali, when I was in 10th grade and staying at my nani’s place without my parents, I bought a ladhi and took out all the mirchis. I lit each one with a candle and threw them, just like I’d seen the boys do. Then my father walked in—I got a scolding I’ll never forget! But he eventually said, ‘You’re grown up—just be careful.’”
Diwali, however, isn’t the same for Jaya anymore. The seasoned actress explained, “I used to enjoy bursting crackers, but that changed once I began working with animals. The noise from crackers is far more intense for them; what we hear is amplified fivefold, especially for dogs, whose hearing is much more sensitive than ours. And the pollution from crackers can be terrible for people with asthma. Tragically, some people even tie crackers to animals’ tails, causing them immense distress. For me, Diwali is about lighting up the world and bringing in positive energy. It’s not about loud crackers, noise, or pollution. Diwali means positivity, happiness, good food, meeting friends and loved ones, sharing gifts, and having fun.”
Jaya Bhattacharya plays Urmila, the stepmother of Kartik (Ashish Dixit), who harbors a hidden agenda against her family. 30th October 2024, New Delhi: The Services Export Promotion Council (SEPC), under the aegis of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, hosted a groundbreaking initiative, the Global Services Export Conclave (Hybrid Mode) on the 29th October 2024 at Hotel Le Méridien, New Delhi.
The comprehensive one-day forum brought together industry leaders, policymakers, and sector experts to advance India's capabilities in infrastructure, space, energy (including nuclear), and defence services globally.
Graced by the Chief Guest Shri Senthil Nathan S, Director, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, the event focused on critical regions, including Oceania, Northeast Asia, Asia and CIS, Africa, GCC, LAC, NAFTA, and the EU. The sessions addressed India’s market potential, sectoral offerings, and emerging trends for consultancy services supported by multilateral funding agencies.

This sector is projected to grow further, potentially reaching $100 billion by 2030 if we maintain a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 18%. Our focus on engineering, design, construction, and R&D will be crucial in harnessing these opportunities. I am looking forward to the industry and the ministries coming together focus on opportunities like expos etc that focuses on capturing new ememarkets in emerging.
Today’s discussions on opportunities and challenges within the LAC, NAFTA, and EU regions, underscore the vast economic potential awaiting Indian businesses. The digital age offers us a unique advantage to bridge the geographic distance that once posed challenges, allowing sectors to expand globally. With the support of the Ministry of External Affairs, the Ministry of Commerce, and our embassies, we’re committed to easing entry-level barriers and driving initiatives that empower small and medium enterprises to explore new markets. In the television industry, it’s common for actors to get typecast, particularly when they portray negative characters. Anurag Sharma, who is set to bid farewell to his role as Shamsher in Sun Neo’s Chhathi Maiyya Ki Bitiya, recently shared insights about his journey on the show and his thoughts on being typecast.
Anurag Sharma revealed that his role initially started as a cameo, but it soon expanded. The actor explained, “Taking on this role felt like a special cameo, much like what big stars do for friends in the industry. When I got the call, I was already committed to another project and had limited availability, but the scene in the first episode was compelling and well-written. Plus, the producers are friends who genuinely wanted me to be part of it. Initially, it was just one episode, but the role grew to 12-15 episodes, which was a delightful surprise. After I wrapped up my previous project, I got another call for Shamsher’s return, and since I had the time, I jumped back in. It’s bittersweet to say goodbye to the show; I genuinely enjoyed working with the team.”
Known for his negative roles, from Pavitra Rishta to Chhathi Maiyya Ki Bitiya, Anurag shared his concerns about being typecast. “I can’t help but wonder if I’ve been typecast. In my last three shows, I’ve predominantly played similar roles, and it seems like people automatically associate me with a negative character. While it’s flattering to have built a reputation, I hope to show that I’m a versatile actor who can tackle any character—positive or negative. In typical TV shows, the hero is often the strongest character, with the villain right beside him. When they think of a strong villain, they think of me, but I’d love the opportunity to be considered for a strong hero role someday, too.”
In Chhathi Maiyya Ki Bitiya, Anurag plays Shamsher, a tough character closely connected to Vaishnavi, portrayed by Brinda Dahal. His performance has garnered praise from the audience.
