Sustainable Packaging Drives India's $450 Billion Food Industry Growth


●         India's packaging market has surpassed $86 billion, becoming the third-largest globally.

1st October 2024: The 18th Edition of Fi India & 6th Edition of ProPak India 2024 commenced at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC), bringing together key stakeholders from the food, health, packaging, and processing sectors. Organized by Informa Markets in India, the expos featured over 340 exhibitors and will attract more than 17,000 visitors collectively.

The post-pandemic era has ushered in significant growth in the online food sector and packaged food products. According to a report by IMARC India, the market size for packaged food is projected to reach USD 3.4 billion by 2027. The Indian food processing industry, which represents 32% of the country’s total food market, stands as one of India's largest sectors, contributing approximately 14% to the manufacturing GDP, 13% to exports, and 6% to total industrial development. By 2025-2026, this sector is expected to be valued at over USD 535 billion.

Dr Suresha, President,  Association of Food Scientists & Technologists India (AFSTI), said “India's food industry is witnessing significant growth, with exports increasing nearly sixfold. As the largest producer of millets and milk, India aims to boost milk production from 230 to 300 million metric tons by 2030. Additionally, grain production has surpassed 330 million metric tons, and the country is the second-largest meat producer, emphasizing a focus on expanding exports. The packaging industry, growing nearly sixfold compared to a decade ago, plays a crucial role in supporting this expansion. Government initiatives like Atma Nirbhar Bharat are further fuelling growth in food processing, offering benefits for women-led startups, including no GST for the first five years and additional subsidies. As Bangalore continues to strengthen its position as a hub for food industry R&D, these trends highlight the critical role of both ingredients and packaging in shaping the future of the industry."

Mr. Nilesh Lele, President, Chamber for Advancement of Small and Medium Businesses (CASMB)said "The Agri and Food industry contributes nearly 16% to India’s GDP, valued at approximately USD 450 billion (around INR 30 lakh crore) annually. Dairy alone accounts for about 20% of this sector, with a market size of INR 6 lakh crore, and value-added dairy products such as ghee, cheese, and butter are driving significant growth. India’s milk consumption stands at 292 ml per capita per day, with room for growth as value-added products become more popular. Other key sectors include beverages at INR 2 lakh crore and snacks and bakery each contributing around INR 1 lakh crore. The growth in the packaged and processed food industry is accelerated by technological advancements like extrusion, which has transformed snack production. While India’s packaged food consumption is currently around 7%, there is potential to increase this to 20%, reducing post-harvest losses and extending shelf life, as seen in more developed markets where packaged food consumption reaches up to 80%. As the global population grows, efficient food processing and packaging solutions will be crucial to meeting the increasing demand for food with longer shelf life and better transportability, emphasizing the importance of innovation in this sector."

Mr. Sagar Singh, Joint Director, Chemical Department, Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) under Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Government of India, said "Our aim at Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is to create industry-friendly regulations that enhance operational efficiency. Recent revisions to packaging and labeling regulations at FSSAI, along with our commitment to aligning Indian standards with international benchmarks, are key initiatives. As we work towards revising food packaging standards, we anticipate that the quality of Indian food products will not only meet but potentially surpass global standards in the near future.”

Mr. Prasad Balan Iyer, Director, SIES (South Indian Education Society) School of Packaging, said “India has now become the third-largest packaging market globally, surpassing Japan, with the industry exceeding USD 86 billion in value. The global packaging market, valued at over USD 1 trillion, is driven by sectors like e-commerce, food delivery, pharma, and the food industry, particularly in cities like Bangalore and Mumbai. Packaging plays a crucial role in food safety, extending shelf life, and boosting India's export competitiveness. In 2023, India's packaged food sector reached a market size of USD 2.8 billion, with projections suggesting it will grow to USD 6.4 billion by 2029. This expansion highlights shifting consumer preferences and the growing demand for convenient, ready-to-eat options in one of the world's most populous countries. As sustainability takes center stage, addressing degradation issues becomes essential in creating packaging solutions that are not only effective but also environmentally responsible. Ensuring that packaging meets stringent safety standards for human consumption is paramount. The participation of diverse experts from esteemed institutions like IIT Delhi and IIT Roorkee, along with industry leaders, enriches the conversation and encourage collaboration. Importantly, engaging the student community is vital in bridging the gap between academia and industry, paving the way for future innovations.”

XG has announced the release of IYKYK, the second pre-release track from their upcoming 2nd mini album "AWE," set to drop on Friday October 11th.

पुरस्कार स्वीकारल्यानंतर मनोगत व्यक्त करताना  प्रभावळकर म्हणाले की, वसंत कानेटकर यांच्या नावाचा पुरस्कार हा त्यांचा आशीर्वाद समजतो. आजवरच्या कारकिर्दीतील सर्व सह कलाकारांच्या वतीने पुरस्कार स्वीकारतो. तसेच सर्व नाटककाराना कृतज्ञातपूर्वक अर्पण करतो. लेखक असल्याने नि:शब्दतेतील बोलकेपणा समजतो असे म्हणत कधीच दिग्दर्शकाच्या कामात व्यत्यय आणत नसल्याचे त्यांनी सांगितले. ते म्हणाले की, मी लेखक आणि अभिनेता असल्याने लेखकाला काय म्हणायचे ते समजून घेता येते. व्यक्तिरेखेची तयारी करण्याबाबत सांगायचे तर वाचिक अभिनयातून गंगाधर टिपरे सापडले. अलबत्या गलबत्या मधील चेटकीण रंगभूषेतून समजत गेली. तयारीने रोल करायला आवडतात. झपाटलेलामधील तात्या विंचू सहजपणे करता आला, तर चौकट राजाधील रोल दबावाखाली केल्याचेही त्यांनी सांगितले. दिग्दर्शक विजय केंकरे यांनी दिलीप प्रभावळकर यांना प्रश्न विचारून दिलखुलास संवाद साधला.

माझा पुढचा जन्म महाराष्ट्रात व्हावा अशी इच्छा व्यक्त करत पंडित हरिप्रसाद चौरसिया म्हणाले की, इतकी वर्षे महाराष्ट्रात राहात असल्याने अलाहाबादमध्ये जन्मल्याचे विसरून गेलो. मी इथे का नाही जन्मलो असा प्रश्न नेहमी पडतो. माझा पुढचा जन्म महाराष्ट्रमध्ये व्हावा, असा रसिकांनी आशीर्वाद द्यावा असेही ते म्हणाले. प्रसिद्ध शास्त्रज्ञ ज्येष्ठराज जोशी काकोडकर यांना उद्देशून म्हणाले की, डॉ. काकोडकर आपल्या देशाचे 'ओपनहायमर' आहेत. काकोडकर म्हणाले की, चतुरंगसारखी संस्था सर्वांगीण कामे करत आहे. प्रत्येकाला आपली जागा दाखवण्याचे काम ही संस्था करत असल्याचेही ते गंमतीने म्हणाले.

देवकी पंडित यांनी ज्येष्ठ संगीतकार अशोक पत्की यांच्याबद्दल गौरवोद्गार काढत म्हणाल्या की, अशोक पत्की यांच्या संगीतात अभिजात संगीताचे बीज असल्याचे जाणवते. त्यामुळेच त्यांच्या संगीतरचना अजरामर होतात. राग संगीताचे भावविश्व त्यांच्या छोट्याशा रचनेतही पाहायला मिळते असेही त्या म्हणाल्या. यासोबतच देवकी यांनी आभाळमाया या गाजलेल्या मालिकेच्या शीर्षकगीताचे सुरेल सूर छेडले. चतुरंग च्या चतुर रसिकांनी त्यांना उत्स्फूर्तपणे दाद दिली.

ऍड. उज्ज्वल निकम यांनी आपल्या अनोख्या वकिली शैलीत संवाद साधत रसिकांची मने जिंकली. ते म्हणाले की, वकिलाला भाषणाची आणि फुकट बोलायची सवय नसते, पण महनीय व्यक्तींचा सन्मान करण्यासाठी इथे आल्याचे उज्ज्वल निकम म्हणाले. इथे आल्याने आपणही चतुरंग बनल्याचेही ते म्हणाले.

विनोद तावडे यांनी पुरस्कार विजेते सर्व देव माझ्या पाठीशी होते अशी भावना व्यक्त केली. इथले चांगले ते घेऊन जाणार आहे. चतुरंगपासून कधीच दूर जाणार नाही. तरुण प्रेक्षकांची गती वाढविण्याकडे लक्ष द्यायला हवे असेही त्यांनी सूचित केले. डिजिटलचा अवलंब करायला हवा आणि चतुरंग आता दिल्लीत व्हायला हवा असेही ते म्हणाले.

चित्रपटांची निवड करताना आपण फारशी चुझी बनत नसल्याचे रोहिणी हट्टंगडी म्हणाल्या. छोटे पण चांगले रोल्स केले. नाटकांमध्ये माझ्यासाठी असलेलेच रोल ऑफर करण्यात आले. आपण दिग्दर्शकाची अभिनेत्री असल्याचे मान्य करते असे त्या म्हणाल्या. जयदेव यांनी कधीच मला दिग्दर्शक म्हणून काही सूचना दिल्या नाहीत असेही रोहिणी म्हणाल्या.

या सोहळ्याच्या पहिल्या दिवशी अभिनेत्री-नृत्यांगना शर्वरी जमेनीसने नृत्यवंदना देत अर्ध्य सादर केले. सौमित्र पोटेने 'महाराष्ट्राची हास्यजत्रा'मधील कलाकारांची मुलाखत घेतली. यात सचिन गोस्वामी, सचिन मोटे, पृथ्विक प्रताप, रोहित माने, शिवाली परब यांनी सहभाग घेतला. दुसऱ्या दिवशी कविवर्य कुसुमाग्रज आणि नाटककार वि. वा.  शिरवाडकर समोरासमोर आले तर त्यांच्यामध्ये कशा प्रकारच्या गप्पा रंगू शकतात याची झलक दाखवणारा 'हा सूर्य... हाच चंद्र!' नाट्य प्रयोग सादर करण्यात आला. सौ. धनश्री लेले यांनी लिहिलेल्या आणि दिग्पाल लांजेकर यांनी दिग्दर्शित केलेल्या या प्रयोगात अजय पूरकर आणि दीपक करंजीकर यांनी काम केले. प्रथमेश लघाटे, मुग्धा वैशंपायन, शमिका भिडे यांच्या आवाजात रसिकश्रोत्यांमध्ये लोकप्रिय असलेल्या सर्व प्रकारच्या गाण्यांची 'ओठांवरची आवडती गाणी' ही संगीत मैफल रंगली

This unique project endorses the nation’s ‘Make-in-India’ initiative by enabling Indian coffee to reach European markets directly.

Empowering family-owned coffee farms in Coorg (Karnataka, India):

India, the world's eighth-largest coffee producer with an export value of close to USD 1.25 billion, is known for its unique coffee flavours,. The annual coffee consumption at Škoda Auto Volkswagen India's headquarters in the Czech Republic amounts to approximately 25 tonnes. Recognizing India’s rich coffee heritage, the brand strategically chose to directly source the coffee and, in turn, support family-owned coffee farms in Coorg. The 'Curiosity Fuel' initiative is redefining the coffee supply chain by directly engaging with local farmers and eliminating multiple intermediaries. This approach not only ensures fair trade practices certified by the Rainforest Alliance but also promotes permaculture farming, emphasizing ecological and social responsibility.

Focus on sustainability and circular economy principles:

Škoda Auto a.s.  is using coffee bean husks as a tanning agent for leather seats in Škoda’s Kodiaq and Octavia models, leading the way in eco-friendly automotive manufacturing. Škoda Curiosity Fuel Initiative:

Škoda Auto a.s. has rolled out a new coffee called ‘Curiosity Fuel’ across the company in the Czech Republic. This special blend is grown, roasted, and packaged in a way that is friendly to both nature and farmers. Specially created for Škoda Auto a.s., ‘Curiosity Fuel’ is designed to inspire staff with fresh ideas and further the group’s sustainability objectives as outlined in Strategy 2030.
