The Resurgence of Tradition –Baaya Design to Conduct Kalighat Painting Workshop

What: Baaya Design, where cultural art forms go hand in hand with contemporary design elements, offers an exquisite range of products and art forms handpicked to tell one’s story and extend their legacy. The famed store will present an interactive session on Kolkata's native, satirical style of the art form known as Kalighat paintings. Hosted in collaboration with the Ekibeki Association, the three-hour session will be led by the grass-roots artists Radha and Tagar Chitrakari, who hail from Medinipur district in Bengal.
The workshop will feature discussions on the evolution and influence of the art form over the years, and allow participants the chance to learn Kalighat drawing and painting techniques. Participants will also have the chance to create their own paintings, using organic colours made from turmeric, local flowers, and leaves boiled in coconut shells with special glue.
Kalighat painting is a school of bold and figurative art originated in Kolkata in the 19th century. Known to have developed in the vicinity of the city’s iconic Kalighat Kali Temple, Kalighat painting’s evolution in an urban setting makes it unique among India’s other cultural arts. Painted primarily on mill-made paper with flowing brushwork and bold, homemade dyes, the themes of these paintings originally depicted mythological characters. However, it later evolved to capture the artists’ reactions to city stimuli, often revolving around the stock characters of the babu, his wife, or the courtesan.
Join us as the two Chitrakaris paint and sing their way through this session; it's as authentic as the experience can get.
