Irish based Novaerus 'Defend 1050' effective at reducing MS2 Bacteriophage, a surrogate for SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), by 99.99% in 15 minutes

30 independent agencies, including NASA and hospitals use the portable air disinfection device which runs on low energy consumption
India, 25thJune 2020   There is mounting research to suggest that clean, disinfected air plays a vital role in preventing the spread of SARS-CoV-2, the virus causing COVID -19. While respiratory droplets are considered the primary transmission route, aerosols are being considered by many health authorities as a possible mode of infection transmission. This advocates that viral particles can remain suspended in the air for long periods and can be inhaled.
To combat that, Novaerus - an Irish company that manufactures and sells patentedmedical-grade, clean air solutions, has announced successful independent test results for the Defend 1050. The portable air disinfection device has shown effective results at reducing MS2 Bacteriophage, a surrogate for SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), by 99.99% in 15 minutes.
The Defend 1050 combines rapid air disinfection and purification into one safe and portable device. Designed for continuous cleaning of the air in large spaces and rapid remediation in situations with a high risk of infection, the device uses Novaerus patented ultra-low energy plasma technology combined with a triple-stage filtration system from Camfil. As Novaerus plasma is a non-selective, rapid killing technology, it offers a unique and safe solution to kill airborne viruses 24/7, reducing the risk of disease and infectious outbreaks like COVID-19, Influenza, Tuberculosis, Measles, MRSA (Superbug), Norovirus, C-Difficile, Acinetobacter, Aspergillus Niger, etc.
Since 2009, Novaerus has been researching and developing plasma technology that is unmatched in its ability to safely terminate airborne pathogens that lead to infection in populated indoor spaces. To bring this technology into India, Trivector Biomed LLP has been a partner to Novaerus since 2016. Mr. DilipPatil, Director of Trivector Biomed LLP said, “Novaerus, specializes in non-chemical air disinfection using patented ultra-low energy plasma devices that has achieved a remarkable feat. The new Defend 1050 is a portable, easy to use device ideal for rapid disinfection and purification of the air in large spaces and high-risk situations such as operating theatres, ICUs, IVF labs, emergency and waiting rooms, schools, offices and construction zones. Our aim is to make this product available at a low cost or even put it out on rent in order to help maximum people in India.”
The development of Novaerus has been supported by Enterprise Ireland through several support programs and market development activities.  Elaborating on the same, Abhinav Bhatia, Director, India & South Asia - Enterprise Ireland states, " Enterprise Ireland which is the venture capital and trade promotion arm of the Irish government has always supported innovative companies working on solving global problems. Noveurus with its cutting-edge technology has always been at the forefront of air purification systems and the research has shown that their technology can help in preventing the spread of SARS-CoV-2, the virus causing COVID -19.  I am very pleased that the Government of Ireland, through Enterprise Ireland, has been able to support a product that is being used in real-life clinical settings all across the globe, including COVID hospitals”
Mr. Bhatia, further addedResearch and innovation will play a significant role in tackling the Covid-19 pandemic and technologies like these will have a positive impact on the health and wellbeing of patients, families, healthcare workers, and the healthcare system.”
The traditional methods of air purification like air handling units are expensive to install, operate and maintain and they can only filter the particles and block certain bacteria, while activated carbon filters can reduce only VOCs. Sharing more insights about the technology, Mr. Patil mentioned,“Novaeruss ultra-low energy plasma based air-disinfection devices both ‘trapand ‘killthe impurities in a safe and eco-friendly way which can be used 24/7 around human beings in closed rooms with positive/negative pressure.”
As research continues, one thing is increasingly clear; standard infection prevention and control protocols need reinforcement. Many hospitals worldwide have installed Novaerus technology to help reduce transmission of SARS-CoV-2 among healthcare workers and patients.
About the testing process:
To test the virus-destroying power of the Defend 1050, Aerosol Research and Engineering (ARE) Laboratories (a GLP certified laboratory), undertook experiments to investigate how effectively the device could remove small aerosolized viral particles from the air, to characterize how the device might work on capturing the particles that carry infectious viruses.
They performed the experiments in their Bioaerosol Test Chamber, which is located in their U.S. lab. The test chamber is 16m3, about the size of a small room. The Defend 1050 was placed in this sealed environment with aerosolized MS2, which is a viral RNA bacteriophage that is commonly used as a surrogate for the influenza virus and now being considered as a surrogate for other RNA viruses such as SARS-CoV-2.
About Novaerus:
Novaerus is part of WellAir, an Irish company on a mission to reduce indoor airborne pollutants to create living, working, and healing spaces that foster rather than detract from human health, productivity, and wellbeing. WellAir and its brands, Novaerus and Plasma Air, can be found installed in hundreds of hospitals, senior living facilities, schools, casinos, railway stations, residences, ambulances and industrial facilities in more than 40 countries around the world.

7th May 2020: The world as we know has changed forever and as our country grapples daily with the increasing COVID – 19 crisis, the most vulnerable sections of the society are themost impacted. There is scarcity of jobs as construction sites, malls, transport and infrastructure all have closed; leaving the daily wage workers, laborers and street vendors stranded and without even the most basic essential like food to stay alive.
In such circumstances, Vikas Bansal, a Delhi based entrepreneur and Co – founder of Prakriti E-Mobility currently, has geared up and joined the cause of providing food to the marginalized communities. Every day, he already distributes food to more than a 100 people. Now, he has chosen another unique way of helping the needy. Vikas has penned down a collection of 75 poems, written during the ongoing lockdown. He will be retailing this book of poetry to select patrons and raise funds. For every book sold, he will add an equal amount from his personal funds to donate towards this initiative and, raise a substantive amount to provide more than 10000 meals to vulnerable families.
Vikas is responsible for more than 500 employees directly or indirectly. An entrepreneur, businessmen by profession and a poet by passion, though Vikas has penned more than 12 books on Amitabh Bachchan and his movies till date, there was never an intent to sell his books. This is the first time, when he shared his work with friends and family, it was recommended to sell his work. Taking their advice, he decided to put it up for sale and whatever money collected, use it to provide meals and essential items.
“If you have life, you have the world. It does not matter what we came in to the world with. This is not the time to hoard money but to contemplate how we can use it to improve other people’s lives. This is the time to get together as a society. It’s our duty as humans and when I fulfill it, it gives me immense peace. I would like to send a message to everyone to help at least three families each day with food and essential items” – said Vikas Bansal, Poet and Co - Founder Prakriti E-Mobility Private Limited.
The meals will be distributed in partnership with RAHI, a leading NGO that is working towards hunger eradication, currently focused on providing sustenance to Covid19 impacted communities.
Commenting on the initiative, Mr. DolaMohapatra, Executive Director, Rise Against Hunger India, said “We thank VikasBansal for his support towards providing 10,000 meals to people most impacted by Covid19. DoT assures Industry of its full support, especially during the COVID -19 Emergency, to ensure network uptime and Quality of Service to Customers

COAI wishes to categorically dismiss any concerns that may have been reported, suggesting risks to the networks as a result of delays in meeting industry requests to the DoT.
In a meeting today, (April 13) between the DoT Secretary, senior members of the DoT and Director General, COAI, the continued preparedness of the industry to meet the requirements of citizens and customers during the continued period of the quarantine, were discussed.
In taking stock of the performance of the networks over the past weeks of the quarantine, note was taken of the substantial support provided by the DoT to the industry to meet the challenges of the increased traffic load on the networks and the logistical issues involved in maintaining the uptime of the networks. Assistance to request streaming video companies to reduce their content from HD to SD, setting up of single points of contact and Operational Centers in each LSA (Licensed Service Area), continuous interaction with the local TERM cells and local Police and Law Enforcement to provide free movement to critical network personnel, permissions to extend various reporting testing and filing requirements, notification of Telecom as an “essential service”, among other things, all ensured there were significant improvements in the ability of Operators and their partners to function smoothly during the period of the quarantine.
The DoT noted that as a result of the close working between the DoT and Industry, the number of “faulty” BTSs were brought down from approximately 800 from before the quarantine to nearly 290. This was out a total number of approximately 22 lakh BTSs, nationwide. Similarly, the number of optical fiber cuts, were reduced from approximately 100 per day from before the quarantine to approximately 19 fiber cuts during the past 15 days of the quarantine. Instructions were also provided to all power companies to ensure stable and continuous power to cell towers to minimize logistical movements.
In the meeting, the DoT also assured the industry that additional issues like the request for dynamic IP Addresses, additional backhaul spectrum, additional relaxation in filing compliance requirements due to the extension of the quarantine period, clearance of pending network Equipment Type Approvals (ETA), SIM activations, movement of essential goods, etc., would all be reviewed and decisions taken expeditiously to address the concerns of the industry.
During the meeting, COAI raised the need for the government to address the distressed financial plight of the industry, on an expedited basis. It has asked for a reduction in the License Fees (LF) and Spectrum Usage Charge (SUC) as well as modifications in the GST where spectrum debt payments, LF and SUC payments would not be classified as “services” and hence not attract GST. The DoT Secretary referred the matter to Member Finance for his follow-up.
COAI had recently approached Ministry of Finance with key asks including providing soft loan against GST input credit to address the immediate liquidity crunch, reducing the SUC to 3%, reducing License Fee (USOF Contribution) from 8% to 3%. The industry has also urged to exempt the levy of GST on License Fees, SUC and Payment of Spectrum acquired in auctions. It also seeks exemption of service tax on amount of LF/SUC payable by Telecom Operators in compliance with Hon’ble Supreme Court Order.
The industry appreciates the close working relation and timely actions by the DoT and the Secretary, Shri. Anshu Prakash, in addressing the critical issues of the industry during this unique period in the history of the nation. We wish to assure the citizens, customers and the government that despite the precarious financial health, the industry will do everything in its power to ensure that its networks will continue to function as a vibrant, essential component of the nation’s economic and communications health and well-being.
