Double Whammy this Monsoon: Ayurveda to Salve

Need to differentiate the usual monsoon illnesses and COVID-19 fear
July 2020: Monsoon season has set in, bringing along its usual woes, adding fuel to the already flaming COVID-19 disaster. This monsoon, dual burden of diseases is imminent upon us. The usual rise in vector-borne disease during monsoon is putting extra pressure on India's public health infrastructure, which is already burdened with the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the diseases caused due to monsoon and the COVID-19 panic are different, which we need to understand. If we talk about the difference between the symptoms of COVID-19 and common flu — the patient loses his sense of taste and smell in the former but in the latter case, these two are normal.
Are you confused between the COVID-19 panic and common monsoon illnesses? In monsoon, there is a rise of seasonal diseases like malaria, dengue, flu, diarrhoea, conjunctivitis and fevers, which have symptoms similar to that of COVID-19. But these acute diseases are different from that of COVID-19. For seasonal flu strains, you do have the immunity to combat, but for COVID-19, you don’t have as of now. And, in the rainy season, the body becomes increasingly defenceless to medical problems as immune intensity gets lowered. As the manifold increase in diseases is expected this monsoon, you need to boost your immunity doubly. For this, the ancient science of Ayurveda provides certain rejuvenating tips that will boost your immunity and keep you away from viral infections as well as monsoon diseases.
“As the COVID-19 scourge is looming large, and monsoon has already set in, which brings numerous diseases. However, if we follow the Prakriti (PsychoSomatic Constitution), which is determined by 5 elements-air, ether, earth, water and fire, we will sail through this health crisis. As per Ayurveda, the combination of these five elements are into three Doshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha. And, in the (Varsha Ritu) monsoon season, Vata — the invisible force of movement composed of space and air reduces and Kapha (composed of earth and water) increases. Pitta (composed of fire with water) is not increased but gets accumulated wherein Ama (a product of indigestion formed in the stomach, which tends to cause many systemic diseases) also increases along with Kapha. Thus, the digestion of Ama is very important. Therefore, your food should be according to your Prakriti”, said Mr Anand Shrivastava, Chairman, Maharishi Ayurveda.
“Besides following the Prakriti, a balanced lifestyle which involves nutritious eating habits, plenty of exercises, yoga and meditation, sound sleep, herbal and mineral support coupled with several Ayurvedic practices could help in boosting the immune system. Amidst the COVID-19 scourge, we need to rework to boost our immunity to fight the pandemic rather than being carried away with fear psychosis” added Mr Shrivastava.
Combating Monsoon Ailments — The Ayurveda way
As per Ayurveda, in the monsoon season, due to drastic environmental change, the balance of Vata, Pitta and Kapha doshas require extra caution and care to maintain good health. Monsoon is characterized by doshic imbalances and low immunity.
During monsoons, Kapha and Pitta doshas aggravate and weaken body systems. The accumulation of Pitta dosha affects the digestive system to make it sluggish. If the foods are not digested well, Ama (Toxins) are formed, which we need to detoxify. And the process of detoxification neutralises our body. Thus, if we concentrate on our Prakriti, and eat accordingly, it will be digested well, thereby enhancing strength (bal) of the body. This will also give our body the required nutrition. Hence, by strengthening the digestive system and clearing the body of toxins, optimum immunity can be achieved.
Also, Ayurveda does not see viruses as a primary cause of disease. With every disease, the best possible protection is a strong immune system. Enhancement of immunity plays an important role in maintaining optimum health and preventing infectious diseases like COVID-19.
“In Varsha Ritu (Rainy season), usually, immunity gets lowered, allergies, indigestion, infection and sluggish metabolism blow up. However, Ayurveda advises having rejuvenating treatments along with nurturing and nourishing ourselves through a regimen of beneficial diet and lifestyle. We need to augment metabolism and immunity. This plays an important role in realigning these imbalances, building our immunity and checking the adverse impact of seasonal changes on the body”, said Dr Saurabh Sharma, Medical Superintendent, Maharishi Ayurveda Hospital.
According to Ayurveda, monsoon is the best time to detox and rejuvenate, healing chronic diseases and strengthening immunity and health. But the aggravation of Kapha and accumulation of Pitta dosha in monsoon season is the cause of various diseases. It’s up to us how we use its wisdom for enhanced wellbeing.

Covid-19 Compromised IVF Treatment Access to 90% Couples: Study

In the last three months from April to June, less than 1000 patients sought IVF treatment. There has been a steep fall in the number of patients from 50,000 to 1,000 in a quarter
24th July 2020: World IVF Day symbolises the essence and significance of the IVF technique in infertility treatment. In India, only 3 out of 30 million infertile couples could pin their hopes on attaining parenthood through treatment.
However, in 2020, the onset of the unprecedented COVID-19 crisis followed by the lockdown has posed an even greater challenge for 3 million infertile couples in India seeking treatment. Most of the couples had to postpone their plans of parenthood and those going under treatment could not follow through the complete treatment. A steep fall in the number of patients visiting IVF centres for treatment has been observed during this period.
Addressing the ‘Reproductive Health e-Summit’ organised by HEAL Foundation with the support of Bharat Serums & Vaccines on World IVF Day, Dr Jayesh Amin, Clinical Director, WINGS IVF Group, Gujarat Chapter Secretary for Indian Fertility Society, (IFS), said, “Naturally, motherhood is such an experience that every woman yearns for. And for conception, some women take the help of 'Assisted Reproductive Technology' (ART). However, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has affected plans of becoming a mother for those women who were planning or undergoing the IVF treatment'.”
“Generally, the average of couples seeking IVF treatment per quarter is more than 50,000. However, the number of couples seeking treatment have gone down by over 95% during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the last three months from April to June, less than 1000 patients sought IVF treatment. There has been a steep fall in the number of patients from 50,000 to 1,000 in a quarter”, observed Dr Jayesh.
Infertility is no less than an epidemic for young Indians. More and more young couples are seeking infertility treatment. In India, infertility affects around 10% to 15% of married couples. Out of 30 million infertile couples in India, nearly 3 million are actively seeking treatment. The rate is even higher in the urban population where 1 out of 6 couples suffers from infertility and desperately look for solutions.
And during the COVID-19 crisis followed by the lockdown, they have suffered a lot as IVF is a time-sensitive treatment. Every passing week is crucial for couples who expect to become parents through this procedure. The patient treatment schedule has been changed or postponed due to which they have to face huge emotional dissatisfaction and uncertainty. In such a perplexing time, spreading awareness regarding various aspects of reproductive health and assuring such couples through various channels is desirable.
“Out of 3 million people seeking infertility treatment in India every year, around 5 lakh seek In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF)/Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) treatment. But during the COVID-19 pandemic, they have suffered a lot. However, we are committed to spreading awareness amongst the masses regarding reproductive health ever since the outbreak of COVID-19 in India. In such a situation, the event like — Reproductive Health e-Summit is very much required for spreading awareness, and we support such an initiative”, said, Mr Sanjiv Navangul, Managing Director and CEO, Bharat Serums & Vaccines Limited.
The ongoing situation has resulted in a drop in the number of cases. Out of nearly 2000 IVF centres in India, less than 800 have opened up by the end of June.
“Women seeking motherhood through ‘In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) treatment’ from remote areas postponed their plan to conceive during the lockdown because of travel restrictions. And now, post unlocking, the latest surge in the number of COVID-19 cases have thrown a wave of fear, compelling such women to further postpone their plan to conceive through IVF. While the situation is uniform across India, in the east, the number of couples on IVF treatment has been in single-digit for last 2 months”, said Dr Swati Dongre, Infertility Specialist Gynecologist, Santati IVF Treatment & Fertility Centre, Thane West, Mumbai
Talking about the significant reduction in patients undergoing fertility treatment in the country, Dr Sweta Gupta, Clinical Director, Fertility Solutions, Medicover Fertility, New Delhi, said, “The Pandemic has been a challenging phase for everyone including IVF treatment which was categorised as a non-essential service. With the unlocking phase, things have slowly started coming back to normal. Couples that are looking for treatment need not delay their plans anymore. Pandemic will stay with us until we either develop herd immunity or get a vaccine discovered. All procedures of IVF are practised in a highly sanitized environment and there is no need to fear about its success if you follow preventive guidelines issued by the government.”
Adding a new feather in the cap of ‘Health Awareness’ drive series during COVID-19, HEAL Foundation — a healthcare advocacy group organised ‘Reproductive Health e-Summit’ with the support of Bharat Serums & Vaccines to seek experts’ advice on various topics on ‘Reproductive Health in India’ on the occasion of World IVF Day on 24th July 2020. Ten reproductive Health & IVF experts from across India participated as speakers in the eSummit.

India’s Most Vulnerable Children on the Brink due to COVID-19

Chennai, 13 July 2020 – World Vision India urgently calls on civil society organisations and leaders to attend and respond to the deadly long-term impact of COVID-19 on India’s most vulnerable, especially children. The Unmasking the Impact of COVID-19 on Asia’s Most Vulnerable Children early recovery assessment report released by World Vision Asia Pacific, reveals that resulting economic, psychosocial, and physical strain on Indian families has negatively affected all aspects of child well-being including access to food, nutrition, healthcare, essential medicines, hygiene and sanitation facilities, as well as child protection and safety.
“People in our communities have become very depressed. No one imagined that we would come to such a state of depression which is forcing children to go to work. A lot of children during this time are involved in child labour. There are many children who are selling vegetables on the streets. The parents have not been able to go to work and this has affected the economy of the family. Children have become depressed seeing the plight of their parents” says 15-year old Sheetal.
The early recovery assessment report based on data gathered from 5668 households across 119 districts from 24 states and 2 union territories (Delhi and Kashmir) highlighted that the livelihoods of more than 60% of parents or caregivers were fully or severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The daily workers who are the largest segment in the survey are the hardest hit. The loss of livelihoods that has resulted from government lockdown measures has become the top-most concern for the rural and urban poor. About 67% of urban parents/caregivers have reported the loss of jobs or income reduction in the previous weeks.
Over 385 million children live in extreme poverty across the world. Of these, India is home to 30 percent, the highest in South Asia. The impact of COVID-19 is threatening to reverse decades of progress in the fight against poverty and income inequalities, potentially stalling India’s economic growth at zero percent, in 2020, and putting millions of children at increased risk.  “Women and children are usually the worst affected in any disaster. The COVID-19 crisis is proving to be no different. It is causing cascading damage to poor and vulnerable children — through stretched health services, inadequate medical supplies, higher risk of violence & exploitation, minimal access to education and lower intake of nutritious food stemming from the severe drop in income levels in families.  The findings in our Recovery Assessment Report are a timely call to all stakeholders to respond as best as they can to this difficult situation, which may continue for several months, with continued increase in infections in many countries” says Cherian Thomas, Regional Leader, World Vision International, South Asia and Pacific region.
Results of the report reveal that 55.1% of the interviewed households could get only two meals a day, which indicated limited access to basic food supplies due to affordability challenges. Access to adequate water and sanitation remains a challenge, which increases the risk of malnutrition and the spread of the diseases, including COVID-19. The stress on families related to loss of income, lack of school, change of children’s behaviour and quarantine measures contributes to children experiencing physical punishment and emotional abuse. The report also indicates that 40% of children are stressed out due to the current situation.
While the potential longer-term effects on the global economy and individual countries are dire, World Vision India calls on relevant authorities to prioritise the most vulnerable people by providing intense socio-economic and technical support. The report offers short, medium, and long-term recommendations for government, multi-lateral and implementing partners to meet the needs of vulnerable children and protect them from diseases, including all forms of violence.
The Unmasking the Impact of COVID-19 on Asia’s Most Vulnerable Children early recovery assessment analysis, is a compilation of survey data from over 26,000 people in 335 communities across nine Asian countries: Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka.

New Delhi
, June 23, 2020 - Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) today announced five new return-to-work solutions that will help organizations accelerate business recovery and reopening plans in the wake of COVID-19. The new solutions, which will assist in controlling the spread of the virus and enabling business continuity, will be implemented and managed through HPE Pointnext Technology Services for a fast, seamless transition. These solutions will scale for businesses of all sizes using secure, high-performing HPE servers for the edge, Aruba AI-powered network infrastructure, and technologies from HPE’s rich ecosystem of partners.

Additionally, to help customers conserve capital and lower financial risk, HPE offered $2 billion in financing and new programs through HPE Financial Services. These offerings include deferred or reduced expenses, short-term rentals, and generating cash by converting existing, owned IT assets into capital that can be applied to purchase new, upgraded technology.
The five new return-to-work solutions HPE introduced today will address the next phase for customers who are anticipating at least a portion of their employees to safely return to their regular place of work in company facilities. HPE’s customers that have already begun implementing these solutions range from large international airports and global food processing and packaging plants, to retail stores and corporate offices.
