India’s auto-components exports set to decline 20% in FY21

India’s auto-component manufacturing is a sector dominated by micro, small and medium enterprises and it contributes 2.3% to the country’s GDP and 4% to total goods exports.  According to an estimate by rating agency CRISIL, the sector may witness 20% decline in exports during 2020-21, which comes on the back of 6% fall in shipments in the previous year. Thus, auto-component manufacturers have to navigate through decline in export revenue for two years consecutively.
CRISIL expects exports to recover in 2021-22 and grow by 16% on the back of pickup in demand from major markets. USA accounts for 25% of India’s exports of auto-components, while Germany, UK, Thailand and Italy contribute 7%, 5% and 4% each respectively.
CRISIL also expects demand for auto-components from automobile manufacturers (who are called OEMs) and from aftermarket (replacement) to decline during 2020-21. Auto-component manufacturers earn more than 66% of their revenue from sales to domestic automobile manufacturers or OEMs. According to the rating agency, for the first time in 10 years, auto-component makers are facing fall in demand from all the three sources, namely export market, OEMs and aftermarket. This will hurt the absolute operating profit of auto-component manufacturers by 30-35%, CRISIL estimates.
The total revenue of auto-component companies rated by CRISIL is estimated to have declined to Rs. 3.2 lakh crore in 2019-20 from Rs. 3.6 lakh crore in the previous year. This is expected to fall further to Rs. 2.7 lakh crore in 2020-21, before recovering to Rs. 3.3 lakh crore in the following year.

Despite immediate challenges, India’s economic potential remains high

India faces economic as well as COVID-related health crisis both at home and abroad. Present is an unprecedented and challenging phase. India’s GDP has drastically declined. According to a report, it has turned negative in current fiscal, a situation never happened before.
A deep recession has set-in with dried up demand across most sectors except probably essentials and healthcare. Supply is constrained for most goods and services, a situation likely to last for a long period. Government has taken a proactive stand on managing such a crisis.
Within a short span, an economic stimulus package covering also the health sector has been put up, encompassing apart from liquidity injection, well studied structural economic reforms for practically all critical sectors—coal, power, airlines, banking, MSMEs, NBFCs and others. Quite a few long pending legal and procedural reforms have also been undertaken.
A new model of Indian economic development seems to be evolving that emphasizes “Self-Reliant Digital Economy’ ‘empowerment rather than entitlement’, ‘collaborative strong government, strong business & strong society’ and ‘enlightened nationalism in liberalized times’.
A major issue of concern pertains to migrants’ exodus from places of their work, which holds manifold economic repercussions. But India’s economic potential continues to remain high. A number of global leaders are of the view that India is the only country which stands tall to gain from manifold opportunities arising from disruption of major supply chains due to sudden onset of Covid-19.
This has been made possible with the Government’s timely facilitation of the trend of turning challenges into opportunities. For example, by way of further easing of doing businesses, enabling companies to become more competitive and creating conducive atmosphere for foreign companies to shift their established operations in China to India. However, implementation hindrances are many which prevent same spirit to percolate down to the ground level, which hopefully will get addressed. Finally, as no proper vaccine cure has been approved, the citizens will have to learn to live with COVID-19.

New Delhi, 15 November 2019: Vistara, India’s finest full-service carrier and a joint-venture of Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines, has been named the ‘Regional Airline of the Year’ at CAPA’s 16th annual Asia Pacific Aviation Awards for Excellence held yesterday at the ongoing CAPA Asia Aviation Summit in Singapore. CAPA awards this title to an airline that has been the biggest standout strategically, has established itself as a leader and demonstrated innovation in the regional aviation sector.
Vistara was selected for its substantial achievement and consistent growth in a highly competitive domestic market largely dominated by LCCs. Vistara's traffic grew by 30% in 2018 to more than five million passengers and its seat count is up by 40% in 2019. In the current financial year, Vistara has already grown its fleet and network by nearly 50% each and flown 4.5 million passengers in the last seven months.
Mr. Leslie Thng, Chief Executive Officer, Vistara, said: “Our vision is to establish Vistara as a global full service airline that India will be proud of. This recognition by CAPA reaffirms our confidence in realising this vision as we broaden our horizons and prepare to launch medium and long-haul international operations while bolstering our presence in India. Our effort continues to be to innovate and stay relevant in the dynamic aviation industry, to maintain the highest standards of operations and to focus on delivering consistent, world-class service to customers.”
Regarded as the pre-eminent awards for strategic excellence in aviation, CAPA first established the awards in 2003, to recognise successful airlines and airports within the Asia Pacific region.
Mr. Peter Harbison, Chairman Emeritus, CAPA, said: “Vistara’s growth from start up in 2015 to become India's sixth largest airline by seats in 2019 demonstrates that there is still a place for a well executed full service business model in a market where LCCs have more than three quarters of domestic seats and approaching one third of international seats. Vistara’s recent move into international operations promises to add a new dimension to the India market.”
CAPA's Aviation Awards for Excellence are intended to reward airlines and airports that are not only successful but have also provided industry leadership in adjusting to a new environment. The CAPA Awards for Excellence are independently researched by an independent international panel of judges, and are not driven by customer surveys or sponsorship.
Earlier this year, Vistara was rated a ‘Five Star Major Airline’ in the 2020 APEX Official Airline Ratings™.
