Sangeeta Ahir fights for women empowerment – calls for an end to domestic violence at Breakthrough fundraiser

Mumbai, September 03rd 2019: The fight for female empowerment in India gained a valuable ally, as the leading Bollywood producer and social entrepreneur Sangeeta Ahir lent her voice to the cause. Over the course of a glamorous evening at Mumbai’s iconic Taj Mahal Palace, charitable trust Breakthrough held their bi-annual fundraiser, ‘Designing Dreams’. A fashion show organised by renowned designer Rohit Bal served as the centrepiece of the evening, as the city’s elite gathered in support of this worthy cause.
As the show kicked off, a number of the country’s most influential women took to the ramp in anarkalis, quilted skirt sets, and saris custom-designed by Bal. All of these items were subsequently purchased by the models, with half of the proceeds going to Breakthrough. The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly Sangeeta Ahir's appearance on the ramp, as she set jaws dropping in a golden saree accessorised with a dazzling larray of polki jewelleries.
“Violence against women is an issue that has plagued our society since time immemorial. As a businesswoman and a mother to two girls, it’s also an issue that’s especially close to my heart. It, therefore, brings me great pleasure to be associated with an organisation like Breakthrough and support the incredible work that they do. This event is an ideal showcase of their commitment to the cause of women empowerment,” said Sangeeta Ahir, following the event. “We must fight for our equal rights apart of rights for women. By using fashion as a platform to promote the message, and involving titans of the industry like Rohit Bal and Dia Jewellery, Breakthrough has created an event for the ages. Our efforts today will allow them to transform the lives of women across the country, and has taken us a step closer to building a better India for everyone.”
Breakthrough was founded in 1999, with the express intention of ending the plague of violence suffered by women and girls across India. Working extensively with young people through training seminars and workshops, Breakthrough is committed to inspiring people to fight for the rights of women and girls. By catalysing leadership in communities, its ultimate goal is to change the deep-rooted cultural norms that perpetuate gender-based discrimination and violence. Some of the nation’s most prominent entrepreneurs and businesswomen serve as ambassadors for the cause, including Michelle Ponawala, Priya Paul, and Sohini Bhattacharya.

Sangeeta Ahir shares a vision of a city free of plastic

Mumbai June 5th, 2019: Social entrepreneur and renowned Bollywood icon Sangeeta Ahir, known for producing hits such as Golmaal and Total Dhamaal (the third highest grossing Bollywood film of 2019) and distributing local and international blockbusters such as Baahubali and Batman vs Superman, led an initiative for an environmentally friendly Mumbai. On the occasion of World Environment Day, Sangeeta Ahir highlighted her concern for our planet by distributing over 1000 cloth bags to an eager audience, in her role as founder of the Maitree Charitable Trust. Each bag bore a message encouraging the public to save the environment and avoid the use of plastic. This effort was further reinforced by interactions with local women and market vendors, encouraging them to use recycled paper or cloth bags for their day-to-day activities.
Founded by Sangeeta and her husband Sachin Ahir in 2013, Maitree has relentlessly campaigned for the empowerment of women in the city, in addition to initiating multiple cleanliness drives aimed at upholding Mumbai’s reputation as a truly global city. In 2018, Maitree partnered with the Rouble Nagi-headed Misaal Mumbai to clean and beautify the iconic Worli Koliwada coastline. With the help of volunteers from across the city, the drive saw the stretch revamped and revitalised, with the houses of the Koli community refurbished and painted in a dazzling palette of vibrant colours.
Sangeeta Ahir’s passion for giving back to society has also seen her appointed the Indian ambassador of HERA – The Light of Women, a global project dedicated to improving the condition of women across the world.
