Agritech start-up Arya.ag reports four-fold jump in profits in H1FY23

India’s largest agritech player continues its distinct and consistent momentum on profitability with a six-fold jump in gross revenues

India, November 29, 2022 — Arya.ag, India’s fastest-growing integrated grain commerce platform, today announced a record-breaking four-fold jump in profits H1FY23 revenues. The company reported a profit of 14.38 crores, an increase over its last year's base 3.86 crores. These profits have been driven by a six-fold increase in gross revenues in the same period. The increase in profitability can be attributed to its distinct ability to layer multiple services on the same grain of the same customer. The platform enables the farmer to store her produce immediately after harvest, to avoid distress sales. It embeds finance on the same stored grain through its fintech engine, and when prices improve in the post-harvest period, it helps the farmer sell the produce by connecting her to many buyers. It earns revenues at each step, with the cost decreasing at each step. The platform has seen unprecedented profits.

Arya.ag holds the unique distinction of being the only profitable agritech in the country, in a scenario where startups have seen significant burn and reported large losses. Arya.ag has been able to develop a resilient and scalable model built on profitability.

The gross revenues reached INR 622 crore for the half-year fiscal period that ended September 30, 2022, and its gross trade value also increased a phenomenal 5X compared to a year-ago period. OBEN ELECTRIC RAISES USD 4 MILLION IN ITS PRE-SERIES A ROUND AHEAD OF DELIVERIES

November 29, 2022, Bengaluru: Oben Electric, a Bengaluru-based electric motorcycle start-up has raised USD 4 Mn as part of its Pre-Series A round of funding. It was led by US India EV Angels LLC, followed by Dholakia Ventures and existing investor We Founder Circle.

We are happy to share that we are now heading towards our next milestone in our ongoing EV journey, whilst moving towards meeting the larger vision. These funds will be used to fulfil existing orders, ramp up production capacity, and expand our distribution network,” said Ms. Madhumita Agrawal, Founder and CEO, Oben Electric.

Commenting on his current investment, Mr. Anirudh Pangarkar, US India EV Angels stated, "We were impressed by the product and its advanced battery technology, giving the company an edge over its competitors. The company has a healthy order book from India and export markets alike, for its first electric motorcycle RORR, comparable to a 150cc ICE motorcycle. Deliveries of the same are slated to begin from Q1, 2023. According to the company, RORR has been developed basis global benchmarks and is well-positioned to enter various international markets in the future.

Previously, the company had raised over USD 2Mn in a seed round in December 2021 from We Founder Circle (WFC), GVK Family Office, MD of Fortune 50 PE Fund & CXOs of MNCs. The funding was seen as one of the largest seed rounds raised at the time by an electric two-wheeler OEM in the country.

Commenting on WFC’s participation in the Pre-Series-A Round, Mr. Neeraj Tyagi, Founder & CEO, WFC said, “We are excited to participate again in the Pre-Series A round after the seed round, as RORR has received an overwhelming response from customers. Premiumization Drove Smartphone Market Growth This Festive Season

Mumbai, 29 November 2022 – The premium segment of the smartphone market grew faster during the two weeks of Navratri and Dusshera compared to the preceding two weeks of Shraddh, according to the findings of GfK, a global leader in data and analytics. Other segments grew faster during the weeks of Dhanteras and Diwali.

According to the GfK report, smartphone sales increased by 40% during Navratra and Dussehra compared to Shradh. The premium segment and 5G-enabled devices drove the majority of the growth. 5G devices grew by 51% and accounted for 48% of the market during Navratri and Dusshera as compared to 24% contribution during festival period in year 2021.  The sales contribution of 5G devices by value was around 75%.

When compared to Navratri and Dusshera weeks, Dhanteras and Diwali saw a 41% increase in smartphone volumes. The sub-15K price segment gained the most, with volumes increasing by more than 50% and contributing 24% to the overall Smartphone category (34% same period in 2021).

Anant Jain, Head of Market Intelligence, India at GfK, said: “This festive season, Indian smartphone shoppers were back in action, splurging after the mood-dampening COVID-19 pandemic in previous years. Every year, by the end of September, people do not shop due to Shradh, which is immediately followed by festivities. That is when people tend to splurge the most. GfK’s weekly report reflects interesting insights into the festive season. The premium smartphone segment during the same time period (₹40K+ segment) grew by 60%. Total smartphone category revenue grew by 38% where 6-6.5" screen size contributed 54% by value and grew by 41%- during Navratri and Dusshera v/s Shradh season this year.”

On the other hand, the GfK report shows that 4G device sales increased by 48% during dhanteras and Diwali period while 5G only increased by 32%, indicating that manufacturers are clearing 4G-enabled inventory through support schemes. During this period, devices with 6.5-7" screen size grew faster (61%) and contributed 50% to the overall smartphone category.

New computational tools help in better epilepsy surgery results, finds studies by Amrita Hospital

Mumbai, 29th November: Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders affecting about 60 lakh people in India. In 70 % of these patients, seizures can be controlled with medical treatment. However, 30 % of patients, (approximately 16 lakh patients in India), have drug-resistant epilepsy which is a severe form of epilepsy that does not respond to medical treatment.

Surgery can be used to remove the 'epileptic focus' from where the seizure originates in patients who have not been helped by medical treatment. A major challenge in epilepsy surgery is the accurate identification of this ‘epileptic focus’. 

To overcome this challenge, the Centre for Epilepsy at Amrita Hospital, Kochi conducted multiple studies between the years 2015 and 2019 in around 100 difficult-to-treat epilepsy patients. They developed and implemented new computational tools which can accurately identify the epileptic focus.  

Said Dr. Siby Gopinath, Clinical Professor, Amrita Advanced Centre for Epilepsy, Amrita Hospital, “in many patients with drug-resistant epilepsy, even high-resolution MRI scans fail to identify the precise brain regions from where the seizure originates. This makes it difficult for these patients to undergo epilepsy surgery. Without having enough treatment options, their quality of life gets diminished, and they become dependent on others due to unpredictable and recurring seizures.”   

He further added, “with this novel technology, more patients with epilepsy who previously did not have the option for surgical treatment can now undergo surgery and avail freedom from seizures. Accurate identification of the epileptic focus in the brain will help surgeons to precisely remove the abnormal brain tissues and minimize the risks and side effects of epilepsy surgery.”

These computational tools use brain images from PET and MRI Scans and EEG recordings of the brain.  EEG (electroencephalogram) is the recording of brain waves by placing electrodes on the scalp or surgically placing them inside the brain (stereo EEG). By integrating data from brain images and EEG, computational tools rank the brain regions from the most abnormal to the least to accurately identify the epileptic focus for planning the surgery. Accurate identification of the epileptic focus not only helps to gain better results in epilepsy surgery but also in the implementation of new treatment modalities such as Deep Brain Stimulation or laser ablations performed in difficult to treat epilepsy cases.
