Bombay Custom Yatch club, CBIC complete Landmark Mumbai-Goa-Mumbai Sailing Expedition

The sailor-officers of Bombay Customs Yacht Club completed their sailing expedition Mumbai-Goa-Mumbai and reached Gateway of India yesterday to a rousing welcome by the Chief Commissioners of Mumbai Customs & Mumbai GST Zone.
They had set sail from the Apollo Harbour in Mumbai on April 23, in their yacht Jaycus III to undertake a sailing expedition to Goa and back. Through the journey, they encountered heavy winds enroute to Goa while the way back was against the wind and tidal forces. The team was led by Shri Kenneth D’ Souza, Assistant Commissioner, who has 26,000 nautical miles to his credit, and comprised of officers of Customs and GST. The BCYC Team arrived at the Dona Paula Jetty, Goa on the evening of April 25 and the team members addressed the Goa Chambers of Commerce & Industry for highlighting the various initiatives undertaken by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) towards Trade Facilitation, Ease of Doing Business, Green Customs Initiative, Marine Pollution, Swachh Bharat etc.
India improved its ranking in the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business Index 2019 under the ‘Trading Across Borders’ category, taking a quantum leap from rank 146 in 2018 to rank 80 in 2019. The BCYC, through this sailing expedition, commemorated this achievement which has been made possible through various innovations such as pre-arrival processing, direct port delivery, Authorised Economic Operator programme etc. The advent of SWIFT, the single window clearance system, has led to a paradigm shift in reducing the procedural burden upon traders. As one of the premier border management agencies in the country, CBIC has continually strived to strike a balance between facilitating trade and guarding the borders while regularly improving the effectiveness of their measures based on feedback from trade.
This landmark sailing expedition was conducted after a hiatus of nearly 15 years and aimed to encourage the spirit of excellence in sailing among young officers of CBIC who act guardians of our economic frontiers. Earlier expeditions by the BCYC have been as far as Muscat, Seychelles, Singapore etc. Jaycus III has also been used by an officer of the department, Shri Gulshan Rai, Padmashri and Arjun Awardee for circumnavigating the Globe.

With it being widely believed that friendships in showbiz are few and far between, it was refreshing to witness the real friendship between popular television stars Aly Goni and Abhishek Verma. The two have become a household name with their dynamic roles in Balaji Telefilms’ Yeh Hai Mohabbatein and are now seen in BCL (Box Cricket League). The duo share the same team in the BCL i.e. AZAMGARH ROYALS, with the player Abhishek often being embroiled in fight and arguments on the ground. However, this time around, things took a surprising turn when his pal - Aly stepped in to save the day and backed Abhishek.
The new season of BCL witnessed a fight erupt between Abhishek and rival team member Gulshan Nain from BENGALURU WARRIORS. A source from the set informs, “Abhishek and Gulshan were seeing getting into a brawl which didn't seem to take a good direction. P MANGATRAM JEWELLERS PRESERVES THE HERITAGE OF HANDCRAFTED JEWELLERY BY EMPOWERING ITS KARIGARS

image.png
Gold jewellery featuring contemporary form and traditional elements have been a significant adornment of woman since ages. India is not only the largest consumer of the yellow metal but also a leading exporter of handcrafted jewellery to the world. And it is here that India’s artisans or karigars have played a dominant role in preserving these rich traditional crafts. It is their skills and expertise in turning out intricate designs into handcrafted jewellery that has won us an enviable reputation across the globe. While these beautiful embellishments signify wonderful moments in people’s lives there is also a dark tale lurking behind this glittering metal. India’s oldest art form of handmade jewellery is in grave danger as the industry is slowly losing its hands!

As we delve further into the nuances of this trade we understand that most of these artisans follow the conventional method of jewellery making to produce handcrafted jewellery. They are compelled to work in the customary work environment where they are exposed to lethal fumes that pose serious health hazards. Moreover, poor wages and long working hours have made their survival vulnerable. These karigars who were once celebrated for their royalty in handcrafted masterpieces have now been forced out of their occupation. While many of the skilled artisans have left the industry the younger generation prefer to work in other smalls scale establishments than learning the traditional craft. This, in turn, has resulted in a huge shortage of skilled labour in the jewellery industry.

P Mangatram Jewellers, a leading name in the world of studded jewellery has taken an initiative to preserve the oldest art form of handmade jewellery. The Hyderabad based jewellery powerhouse renowned for its best ornate pieces understands its responsibility towards the nation and is leaving no stone unturned to preserve its rich heritage. The company celebrates artisanship by partnering with the artisans, empowering them and showcasing mesmerizing pieces of art that has lasting social impact. Every piece of handcrafted designs is accompanied by a signature of the artisan who makes the jewellery truly unique.

Sanjay Gulabani, Director, P. Mangatram Jewellers Pvt. Ltd. said, “We pay tribute to the wonder of artisanal excellence, the real gems of the jewellery industry. Ever since our inception, we have been nurturing homegrown talent as they are ones who understand the core value of jewellery craft. Economic empowerment of these karigars has always been very dear to us. We strive to provide the best environment, financial assistance, equipment and qualitative training to boost their creativity. Every piece of our collection is a signature of human touch, an endeavour to preserve the heritage of handmade jewellery. We owe every bit of our success to our karigars as they are the souls of our enterprise

Each of the karigars at P Mangatram Jewellers works at a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, with the latest equipment, dedicated workstations and fully air-conditioned cubicles. The company provides skill development workshops, periodic health checkups and medical insurance. The artisans draw fixed salary, incentives and employees related benefits. To further upgrade their skills, especially to meet the demands of international clients, they have been given extensive training on the latest techniques.

As P Mangatram Jewellers scaled up its operation one of the objectives was to bring more female artisans in what was once considered male-dominated sector. The company locates distressed woman, trains and deploys them in the workplace community. Today woman account for 25% of artisans employed and they deserve all the celebrations and empowerment. The training program is spearheaded by expert karigars who have had long experience working on various technical aspects of handmade jewellery. The company plans to set up a complete department for woman artisans wherein they will learn how to create and design demand-driven products to be sold in local and international markets.

P Mangatram Jewellers today remains the most preferred studded jewellery manufacturer for top retailers in India and international markets. Every creation is painstakingly designed by our artisans that boast of unmatched quality designs with the minutest attention to every detail. The company is also credited with breathtaking innovation of creating the world’s lightest necklace weighing just 3.5 grams.

The gemstone studded jewellery market in India has grown exponentially over the years. The industry has seen a continuous year on year growth despite volatile gold prices. Taking a view of growing potential in uncut market and plain gold jewellery P Mangatram Jewellers recently launched two new divisions - Meraki and PureGrams. P Mangatram Jewelers primarily exports its precious and semi-precious studded jewellery largely to UAE & USA. The company is growing at 50% annually and aims to achieve a turnover of 1,000 crores in next two years.

National Sailing School, Bhopal and Trishna Sailing Club, Bengaluru came out with flying colours and led the winner tally of the Regatta. Races started at 1100 hr when the wind was between 10 to 12 knots but later it dropped to 8 knots. Waves were still high and unrelenting.

NFAI acquires huge personal collection of Ritwik Ghatak associate Mahendra Kumar

A huge collection of films and other material from the personal collection of Shri Mahendra Kumar, a close associate of legendary Indian Film Director Ritwik Ghatak, has been acquired by National Film Archive of India (NFAI).
Shri Mahendra Kumar, a celebrated still photographer, worked as an assistant cameraman with Ritwik Ghatak for many years. The personal collection consists of celluloid film reels, photographs, 35 mm colour positive slides, black and white negative film strips, posters, scripts, cameras, lenses, film rolls, CDs, DVDs, books, journals, research articles, write-ups, letters, diary, notebooks and miscellaneous items. The material that was housed in Kolkata-based Centre for Studies in Social Sciences is now being transferred to NFAI for better preservation.
“We are delighted and truly honoured to receive this substantial collection of an artist who was closely associated with one of the great stalwarts of Indian Cinema Shri Ritwik Ghatak. I am thankful to Ms. Rosinka Chaudhury, Director CSSSC and Shri Abhijit Bhattacharya, Documentation Officer CSSSC for agreeing to NFAI’s request for prompt transfer of the material to NFAI where it can be stored in a controlled thermal condition. I am thankful also to Shri Mahendra Kumar’s brother Shri Narinder Sabharwal and to the US-based film scholar Shri Anil Srivastava who initiated the dialogue in this process”, said Prakash Magdum, Director, NFAI.
“Since the material is voluminous, the first task is to catalogue and check the content and condition, particularly of film reels. NFAI will plan to digitise the material and upon completion of the process will share a copy of these materials with the CSSSC, for its collection to help researchers and students in their work”, added Shri Prakash Magdum.
“With the help of his friends and brother in 2017, the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta (CSSSC) acquired a collection of the papers, photographs and films of the late Mahendra Kumar, the renowned photographer, cinematographer and film editor (who collaborated most productively with the legend Ritwik Ghatak). Since the CSSSC’s well-known visual archives do not have a provision for film material, we are happy to be able to transfer the collection to the care of the NFAI for restoration, preservation and digitisation. We hope this endeavour will preserve and propagate the work of Mahendra Kumar for future generations”, said Ms. Rosinka Chaudhuri, Director, CSSSC.
A preliminary study of the material suggests that there are more than 1,600 photographs, 2,300 colour positive slide films, 350 stripes of negative films (each stripe contains six rows of negative film folder) as well as about 30 cans of film reels. The oldest photograph dates back to the 1930s. There are some rare photographs of renowned dancer Uday Shankar and his dance troupe. Incidently, Mahendra Kumar was closely associated with Uday Shankar’s creation ‘Shankar-Scope’, he being the main photographer. There are some rare posters of films like Nagarik, Subarnarekha and Titas Ekti Nadir Naam of Ritwik Ghatak in the collection.
“We appeal to film collectors as well as instituions that are having such archival film-related material to deposit it with NFAI so that it can be preserved for future generations and made accessible to film researchers”, said Prakash Magdum, Director NFAI.
NFAI had acquired three unfinished films of Ritwik Ghatak - ‘Kato Ajanare (1959), ‘Bangar Banga Darshan (1964) and ‘Ranger Ghulam (1968) three years back from Government of West Bengal archives.
NFAI has also restored six films of Ritwik Ghatak, namely Ajantrik (1958), Bari Thekey Paliye (1959), Meghe Dhaka Tara (1960), Komal Gandhar (1961), Subarnarekha (1962), Jukti Takko Aar Gappo (1974).

I am therefore glad that the Ideals and Values for which Dr Rajaram Jaipuria stood for, all his life, have been carefully nurtured by his successors, and we have assembled here today to celebrate his Idea of ‘Empowering the Next Generations through Quality Education”.
Dr SK Mahapatra, Director, Jaipuria School of Business proposed the vote of thanks and expressed deep gratitude to Honble Vice President for his gracious presence and sagacious address.
