World Radio Day: RJ who empowered the community beyond studio

Radio has been the key to maintaining much-needed awareness continuity.

In 2015, during her college days, RJ Kalpana Singh Alumnus of Aligarh Muslim University started locating the ongoing issues at grass-root level. Education and self-awareness were the key challenges before our team but together we debunked the myths.

I agreed with the Swami Vivekananda quote that “We want that education by which character is formed, strength of mind is increased, the intellect is expanded, and by which one can stand on one’s own feet.” In the middle of a pandemic, I kick-started an initiative namely – REDY (Radio education for Youngsters) - It has been a critical solution to a growing problem in the community as well. Listeners from all backgrounds and areas, radio education are the only solution that has been able to have such a broad reach across the socioeconomic spectrum. In the sideline we kick started talk shows with experts, locals and community members to create an impact across the society.

In small towns there’s lack of access to spaces of representation but the community radio and helping them at grass root level is the key to unlock the voice of masses.

Generally, RJ is more about a Studio job where you have to sit at a place and record your session but for me radio has the capability beyond any other medium of communication and it has strong roots in remotest areas of Nation and directly impacts the marginalized society of the country.

People generally think Audio without visuals is all about Radio but it’s technically wrong. Radio is about sharing feelings which you can visualize with your level of understanding with RJ. Radio can’t capture your expression but it can create impressions.

During my college days I started a mission to help the underprivileged and vision of the time help me to serve the community during a pandemic with the help of Radio and a team of energized people within the community.

Rising to the pandemic challenge, radios have been playing a vital role in building support systems for marginalized communities to protect themselves against the virus and offering locally relevant information and platforms to share their views, aspirations and feelings.

Radio has served as a key medium to educate and inform about safety & health precautions, symptoms, testing prerequisites, and quarantine myths; at another level, they have been exploding fake news revolving around cyber space.
