How venturing into world of short videos with VMate changed Jharkhand’s Nandita Srivastava’s life

It is widely believed that one needs to have a toned physique to click in the entertainment world, but there have been some very popular actors/entertainers who have made it big in the tinsel town despite having a plus-sized body, thereby paving the way of success for others like Nandita Srivastava, an avid dancer and aspiring actor who has taken her first step towards success with trending short video app VMate.
Nandita hails from small town of Chaibasa, the land of Jharkhand’s folk hero Birsa Munda and a mining hub, and she rarely got a right platform to showcase her various talents during her growing up days. However, things began to take a turn when she moved to Jamshedpur after marriage. The first major opportunity that came her way was participating in a popular dance reality show, ‘Dance India Dance Super Moms’. However, she could not make it beyond top 40 and the performer within went dormant. Years passed by and Nandita satiated her creative self by choreographing performances of children in some schools and society clubs. It was during this period that Nandita got introduced to the world of VMate, one of the most downloaded social media apps worldwide.
She began posting her acting and dancing videos and discovered that they were well received on the app. This new-found acceptance acted as an encouragement for Nandita who made it a point to keep posting videos on VMate amid the hustle and bustle of household. Within a short span, she bagged ‘top creator’ badge and made it to the list of VMate’s top 15 creators. Though her husband and 10-year-old son were supportive of this new avenue, her in-laws and other relatives weren’t very pleased with the idea. But thanks to Nandita’s consistent efforts, she went on to be adjudged the winner of VMate #GharBaitheBanoLakhpati bumper prize of Rs 5 lakh. And this milestone changed the perceptions of everyone around.
In her own words, “When I started making videos, my in-laws did not like it much but they never stopped me from doing it. Winning this award has changed their perspective completely. Those who mocked me for being overweight are now lining up to congratulate.” She added, “This is like a dream and I still don't believe I have won so much money. I took time out of my daily chores and made the videos. In fact, this is a second life for me.”
The prize money, which Nandita calls a “life changing amount” got even more special as the one choosing her video for the bumper prize was none other than her role model and popular television personality Bharti Singh. The star comedian was in fact the one who called up Nandita personally and broke the news of her winning the bumper prize.
Playing a significant role in Nandita’s soaring popularity is her portrayal of ‘Kokilaben’, a character played originally by TV actor Rupal Patel in one of the most popular Indian television series in recent times. Referring to the inspiration she drew from the fictional character, Nandita said, “I like her 'dabangg' style. The character is very cultured and at the same time very strong. The different facets of Kokilaben make the character extremely appealing. Our physique matches too.”
Short video platforms such as VMate have transformed several lives and provided an easily accessible platform to the common man to showcase their talent for the world to see. Attributing her success to VMate, Nandita said, “I am an overweight person and I am fond of making comedy videos. Thanks to VMate, now people have accepted me the way I am and they love my talent.” Notably, VMate has a Rs 100 crore creator fund to support its creators, making it a platform where creators can earn money by shooting videos.
It was special moment for her to know through her Mumbai-based sister that her videos were touching lives in ways she had never imagined.
“My sister, who is stuck in Mumbai due to lockdown, called me and said that her neighbours told her that they watch my videos and keep laughing. They said that my videos were their dose of entertainment and that they waited to them each day…it made me really happy and proud of myself,” says Nandita.
Nandita’s message to other fellow video creators and aspiring actors is simple but meaningful – “keep working hard and be positive in your acts and life”.

How creators on short video app VMate are helping others deprived of food due to corona lockdown

The ongoing war against COVID-19 or Coronavirus pandemic, which has gripped at least 185 countries across the world, still seems far from over. Though the three-week countrywide lockdown in India declared by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 24 is nearing completion, speculations are rife on its extension, based on the opinions of state governments and experts. The impact of the virus outbreak and the lockdown has certainly been felt by one and all, but it has been most apparent among those who have been deprived of their livelihood and bare essentials. Along with government authorities and officials, several people have extended a helping hand in their individual capacity too, ensuring that no child sleeps hungry and no elderly remains empty stomach.
A number of such persons have taken to short video app VMate and shared videos of their distributing foods among the needy. Some of them have filmed others who participated in the noble cause. Videos have been shared on the platform from different parts of the country, showing how government officials and common people are distributing foods among those residing in villages and remote areas.
A VMate user named Shadab Ali has shared a video wherein he can be seen distributing cash and biscuit packets among children and other villagers. He can also be seen spraying sanitizer on everyone’s hands before giving away the packets and currency. Raja, a creator from Bihar’s Bhagalpur, too has shared a video of him distributing food packets among kids and other members of a village. A few other VMate creators, such as Muhammad Kasim and Ansh Jain, have also filmed and shared videos of helping those who failed to procure essential food items in the wake of the lockdown.
Sunny Virdi, a creator from Chandigarh, shared a touching video. In the video, his mother is seen serving food and tea to an old man who could not get anything to eat for over two days. In the video, Sunny has urged all the viewers to do their bit by extending a helping hand to such people who have no shelter or food in this time of crisis.
Apart from these, users have also shared videos of other individuals who distributed food and emerged as a lifesaver for scores of others. A user from North 24 Parganas in West Bengal has shared a video showing members of a self-help group distributing cooked food in a village.
Avadhesh Dixit, a creator from Rajasthan, filmed some individuals carrying packets of grains in a vehicle and distributing them among residents of a village. Several elderlies can be seen receiving the packets filled with foodgrains. The video has in its background a song that has always helped in uplifting our spirits – ‘Hum Honge Kamyaab’, the Hindi version of ‘We shall overcome’.
This is not the first time when users have used VMate, which is known as ‘Rural India’s TikTok’, to showcase how the remote parts of the country are battling the unprecedented crisis. Previously, the creators had shown how authorities were using all means of communication to reach out to millions in villages. Videos shared on the app had showed how information was disseminated through loudspeakers on bicycles and autorickshaws.
VMate too has on its own part taken several initiatives to help people in the outbreak and lockdown situation. Several doctors and medical professionals were roped in to furnish validated and relevant information related to the novel virus among its users. Later, the platform launched a profile titled ‘Myth Buster’, which served corona-related information confirmed by the World Health Organization (WHO). With clear text, Hindi audio and illustrations/animations, right messages were conveyed in the right manner to all. Further, to help people remain engaged and entertained in their homes during lockdown, the app launched a #21DaysChallenge and three games that also raised awareness about the pandemic.

Bhuvan Bam and Ashish Chanchlani's #VMateAsliHoliBaaz Movie brings an exclusive platform for VMate creators

Wednesday,13 March,2020: VMate’s new Holi movie, #VMateAsliHoliBaaz starring India’s top YouTubers Bhuvan Bam and Ashish Chanchlani, has garnered immense appreciation and love from the fans. The video revolves around a comedy faceoff between the two. Fascinatingly, a few VMate creators were also part of this video who come in their on-screen avatar bringing in their funny elements to make the video a perfect binge. The movie seized a lot of social media attraction among different platforms. Media and viewers enthusiastically talked about how a trending short video platform brought to their audience a very new and unique content.
Watching the two YouTube stars act together has definitely been an added frenzy for the viewers. Bhuvan and Ashish created magic on screen with their funny punchlines. It was absolutely delightful to watch them sharing the screen for the very first time.
However, the surprise element in the movie still remained the casting of popular VMate creators who acted along the YouTubers. DadaGiri, the 70 years old Dada from Madhya Pradesh, known for his lively and undaunted nature, entered the scene on a bike where Bhuvan Bam and Ashish Chanchlani were conferring how they are inept to make a video to become the #VMateAsliHoliBaaz. Dada was seen convincing the two Youtubers BB and AC to forget all their worries and enjoy the festival of colours. He definitely stood out for his cool demeanour exactly like the way he is seen posting content around bike stunts on the VMate app.
On the other hand, With Biwi No.2’s entry, the viewers were left baffled as to who the strange looking woman could be, but with Fahad’s entry in the frame, the audience knew they were the funny couple seen posting extremely hysterical content on the VMate app. Biwi No.2’s entry at Ashish’s house dressed up as a woman, blaming him to have thrown balloons at him was yet another comical moment in the movie. Whereas, Fahad  always pulling Biwi No.2’s leg, took him away claiming that he had lost his mind.
Rosy Misra, another very famous VMate creator was his true self in the movie. His passion towards fashion came across very well in movie exactly in the same manner he posts his content on the VMate in different looks and styles. His appearance and readiness to become a heroine was rightly portrayed when he said he wouldn’t settle for anything other than being Bhuvan’s girlfriend in the video.
Over the past years, VMate’s easy-to-use video editing tools, innovative campaigns like VMate Filmistan, VMate Roshan Karo India and VMate’s Sunny Ka New Year Call campaign have garnered tremendous appeal amongst Indian citizens of all ages. It has empowered them to not just express their creativity but has given them the power to own their future by becoming a steady income-generating source for them. Whether it was utilizing VR stickers of Bollywood movie sets, or celebrity jodis from VMate’s association with Nach Baliye Lakhpati campaign on the app making festive videos using VMate's vibrant Diwali stickers or or making a creative video with Sunny Leone video call sticker.
Many of VMate’s popular video creators have become influencers earning incomes worth Rs 2 lakhs per month, purely based on their talents showcased through their short video app.

After YouTube, Bhuvan Bam and Ashish Chanchlani try to rule short video app VMate

It is not always that competitors like Bhuvan Bam and Ashish Chanchlani, who are India’s top YouTube stars, come on the same stage. But trending video platform VMate has done the impossible by bringing these YouTubers together for the first time for a short movie, produced by VMate as part of #VMateAsliHolibaaz campaign.
When the two YouTubers were approached for the movie, their only apprehension was that they did not want it to be a run-of-the-mill. But they soon realised that in offing was a unique opportunity. Their only condition was that they wanted to be in their “own character and zone”. In their own words, they wanted to remain themselves.
Bhuvan Bam, who tops all lists of YouTubers in India, feels that VMate is a new platform that would be loved by all. When asked about the collaboration with VMate, he mentioned that his mother is also fond of the trending short video platform.
Ashish Chanchlani, known for his slapstick comedy, added, “When VMate came to us, we both mutually agreed. We had just one condition that we will be ourselves. I am happy with the way things have shaped up.”
The YouTubers also dismissed all speculations of rivalry, referring to each other as the “closest friend in the community”.
It isn’t the first time that artists like Bhuvan Bam and Ashish Chanchlani have forayed into the world of short video platforms. While the former has appeared on TikTok, the latter has earlier integrated some of VMate’s previous campaigns, such as New Year and #HappyValentinesDay challenge, which featured actress Sunny Leone.
The emergence of short video platforms has provided an unprecedented opportunity to several artists, who earlier thrived solely on the popularity of YouTube. For instance, popular YouTuber Awez Darbar, who choreographs songs featuring famous celebrities, has now become a prominent TikTok influencer. The innovation has redefined the production as well as consumption of video content. Unlike YouTube, the short video platforms are themed towards artistic expression.
While long videos might be informative, the new module of video content has empowered creators to say more in less time. Remember the advent of Twitter? The microblogging platform transformed the way people shared opinions – voicing your mind in just few words. Similar is the phenomena evolved by short video platforms like VMate. It wouldn’t be inappropriate to mention that these apps have ushered in a technological as well as artistic revolution.
