World Vision India reaches over 3 million people with COVID-19 Emergency Response (COVER)

Chennai, 21 July 2020: Aligning with the ongoing relief work by the Government of India, World Vision India has helped with relief to the people most affected by the pandemic across states. In last three months, World Vision India has reached over 3 million people directly through its COVID-19 Emergency Response (COVER).

COVER majorly included awareness and prevention; strengthening medical facilities and food security along with child protection interventions. World Vision India’s teams are closely working with the district administration to provide people with basic essentials during these testing times. Relief assistance included providing cooked meals, dry rations, medical supplies, medical equipment and hygiene kits to the most vulnerable. As part of its emergency response; 4, 19,046 people were provided food assistance through food packets and dry ration and 5, 59,545 individuals were supported through cash voucher programmes. 95,254 hand wash supplies like soaps, detergents, sanitisers, buckets and 12,727 comprehensive hygiene kits were distributed to the vulnerable people.

75,545 children were supported with child protection interventions and 7,243 people including children, parents and caregivers were provided with education support and training. 47 community-level public handwashing stations have been established and maintained as on date. Additionally, 7, 06,937 people were reached through various awareness campaigns on the prevention of COVID-19.

5, 18,628 masks were handed over to health facilities, health workers and communities. 72,910 gloves have been distributed. 54,226 disinfectant / sanitation kits were provided to health facilities and 7,409 medical personnel’s were given personal protection equipment. 3,309 community health workers have been trained and supported to provide community-based services.

“World Vision India teams are working with the Government in assisting them meet the needs of vulnerable people. We plan to reach 3.5 million people through our relief and recovery response by September - 2020. Livelihood assistance will be a major area of focus for us to help families rebuild their lives and provide for their children. In all our response programmes, we ensure that vulnerable sections of the populations like families of migrant laborers, single mothers, people with disabilities and those who are unable to avail the benefits given by the Government are included”, said Franklin Jones, Head – Humanitarian and Emergency Affairs, World Vision India.

As a humanitarian relief organization, in times of calamities and natural disasters like Tsunamis, earthquakes, floods and droughts, World Vision India not only provides immediate relief, it is committed to ensure that the affected communities get back on their feet through long term rehabilitation initiatives.

However, with lockdown still in place in several states, there is still a dire need for food, hygiene kits, medical supplies, medical equipment and livelihood assistance.

A Corporate Partnership to Ensure Food Security to Underprivileged Children and Their Families

Chennai, 26^th May 2020: World Vision India a grass root humanitarian organization, has partnered with Standard Chartered Bank to strengthen its COVID 19 relief response to restore 6000 families from the states of Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Orissa, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh over the next three months.

The whole of India is reeling under the intense impact of the Pandemic COVID-19, due to which the entire country is under total lock-down.  Under such circumstances, the lowest strata of the society who depend on their daily earnings have been the worst hit.  Many of them have lost the only source of their income and have no means to make ends meet or provide food for their families. It is an uncertain future for this vast, invisible majority. With almost of two months-long lock-down of all economic activities, the path to recovery will be long and slow.

World Vision India along with the government- is on the ground reaching out to the most marginalized- daily labourers, migrants and the homeless who are at the lowest in the pecking order and have no access to ration or any social security schemes. World Vision India is striving to reach out to all the program implementation communities (4000 communities across the country) with Information Education Communication (IEC) materials, food, unconditional cash transfers, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kits and hand wash facilities

Standard Chartered Bank has sanctioned INR 1.35 crore to World Vision India to provide dry rations to 6000 families residing in Agra, Kanpur, Muzaffarpur, Saharsa, Bokaro, Ranchi, Bhopal, Hoshangabad, Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Khordha and Balangir districts. Beneficiaries include women headed households, long-term and seasonal migrants, families with physically challenged persons / senior citizens, pregnant women, lactating mothers and children under the age of five.

World Vision India Responds to Ease the Humanitarian Crisis Caused by the Spread of Corona Virus in India.

Chennai, 9^th April, 2020:  Aligning their efforts with the ongoing relief work by the Government of India, World Vision India has started emergency response across many states.

With lockdown in place, there is immediate need for food, hygiene kits, medical supplies, medical equipment and livelihood assistance. “World Vision India teams are working with the Government in assisting them meet the needs of vulnerable people by helping them provide food, dry ration and medical supplies. Our long-term response plan also focusses on ensuring that vulnerable families are able to sustain themselves through the lock-down, are protected from the virus and we are also exploring sustainable livelihood models,” said Franklin Jones, Head – Humanitarian and Emergency Affairs, World Vision India.

World Vision India’s teams are closely working with the district administration to provide people with basic essentials during this 21-day lockdown. The relief assistance includes providing cooked meals, dry ration, medical supplies, medical equipment, and hygiene kits to the most vulnerable. World Vision India during the emergency response phase is providing over 45,030 food packets for vulnerable people through respective local administrations and dry ration to over 700 families including families of commercial sex workers. Around 11,313 children have been reached with age-appropriate health messages.

In the state of West Bengal, World Vision India works with children of commercial sex workers. The team along with providing dry rations is also extending counselling support to adolescent girls who visit the child- friendly learning and recreation centres. Joseph Wesley, Head of the Anti-Child Trafficking Program- World Vision India said, “Already reeling under deep debt, for many mothers and children, COVID-19 is an unmitigated double disaster. First, the fear of infection brought their normal lives to a grinding halt. Secondly, and more importantly, it threatened their very survival because of the sudden loss of livelihood. Adding to this most of them live an undocumented life, with no documents to prove their citizenship or their very existence. This means that they face outright rejection in accessing whatever meagre relief assistance that might have come their way.”

Amazon India partners with World Vision India and responds to COVID 19 crisis

Chennai, 05^th April 2020: As people across the world unite to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, Amazon India and World Vision India stands in solidarity with the communities and are taking measures to help mitigate the risks they face as the pandemic spreads. Amazon India has listed World Vision India as one of their NGO partners and will donate 10% on top of the amount contributed by sponsors and will match with employee donations. As people across the world unite to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, Amazon India is committed to raise 100 crores to help people in need during these challenging times.

Funds raised will go towards the following areas:

* Promoting preventive measures and distributing hygiene products to stop or slow the spread of COVID-19

* Supporting children and families made vulnerable by COVID-19 through direct cash transfers, providing food supplies and other relief assistance

Large sections are staring at joblessness, immediate loss of income and the means of sustenance, as these households depend on daily income. The existing economic slowdown, now worsened by the virus and the necessary lockdown, has affected all sectors. People dependent on the informal economy including agricultural laboureres, domestic workers and migrant labourers are now without income and their livelihood is under severe threat.

World Vision India is on ground distributing Personal Protective Equipment (including masks, hand sanitizers, soaps and other personal hygiene items) to children, families and health workers. Efforts are still ongoing. Teams on ground have also been promoting prevention behaviours, offering essential health advice and psychosocial support.

World Vision India is also working with various stakeholders, including government agencies, in order to build resilience of the most marginalised communities in the times of this pandemic.
