Hyderabad, August 30, 2024: MERU International School is set to welcome student delegates to MERU-JMUN 2024, a premier Junior Model United Nations (MUN) conference for students from Grades 4 to 8, taking place on August 30th and 31st at the Tellapur branch. The conference will feature Ms. Emilia B. Smith, Public Diplomacy Officer at the U.S. Consulate General as the Chief Guest, providing students with invaluable insights into international relations and a rare glimpse into the intricacies of global diplomacy. Bringing together 200 students from top schools across Hyderabad, including Chirec, Oakridge, Gaudium, and Silver Oaks, this event will engage participants in high-level discussions and decision-making processes that simulate real-world diplomatic scenarios.
With the theme "Connect. Cultivate. Catalyze.", MERU-JMUN 2024 aims to equip young minds with the essential skills needed for leadership and diplomacy in an increasingly complex global landscape. The event is a unique opportunity for students to articulate their viewpoints, listen to others and find common ground—core components of effective leadership and responsible global citizenship.
MERU-JMUN 2024 will feature a series of debates across the nine committees, each tackling critical global issues. These committees and their topics include:
UNHRC: Addressing the human rights situation in Bangladesh
UNEA: Reviewing the implementation of the resolution on sustainable and resilient infrastructure, with a focus on renewable energy
UNICEF: Upholding child rights in post or ongoing conflict regions
WEF: Deliberating the ethical implications of mass surveillance, balancing individual privacy and national security
WHO: Formulating policies to strengthen pandemic control and prevention frameworks, with lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic
Lok Sabha: Current matters like the immediate need for a Uniform Civil Code, addressing critical inconsistencies in personal laws and their impact on social, political, economic and legal spheres.
International Press: A platform for budding journalists and photographers to cover the event's proceedings and report on the discussions
Ms. Emilia B. Smith, the Public Diplomacy Officer at the U.S. Consulate General, addressed the junior delegates, saying, “Your ideas, voices, and leadership matter. As you engage in debates, remember to listen, observe, reflect and then act. Focus not on winning or losing, but on the learning that shapes your character.”
Meghana Gorukanti Jupally, Founder and Director, Meru International School, said, “The larger goal of Meru-JMUN 2024 is to build interpersonal skills among participants while increasing their awareness of both local and global social issues. This aligns perfectly with MERU International School’s vision of nurturing well-rounded individuals who are not only academically proficient but also socially conscious and prepared to lead in a global context.”
Participation in MUN conferences has proven to be a significant asset in college applications, with many students from previous years successfully gaining admission to prestigious institutions in the UK and US by highlighting their MUN experience.
