In the background of copyright companies Like Novex communications, PPL and other copyright societies taking legal actions against hotels, pubs, restaurants etc on playing music without taking their license, the ministry of commence and industry has now called for their meeting 31 st December. The meeting has been called to discuss the issues related to single and multiple copyright societies. The meeting will be held on hours before the new year eve, December 31 at 12 pm at Udyog Bhavan, New Delhi.
There are several agencies include Phonographic Performance Ltd (PPL) India, Novex Communications, Indian Performing Right Society (IPRS) and the Indian Singers’ Rights Association (ISRA). PPL and Novex between them have the rights to more than 3 million songs. Novex communications and PPL has taken number of legal actions the joints that have approached the ministry. The hotel association and parties related would also be part of the meeting.
Novex and PPL has been able to get number of injunctions against hotels and other joints to not to be allowed to play music without their license. While the hotels have been fighting to have one body, Novex Communications claims that the court has provided number of injunctions and taken actions against the clubs, hotels etc. This clearly means that we are on the right side of the law. Also a single society means making it a monopoly for one society, which is again not right in the court of law. We are sure that government understands it and we will keep our points in front of them."
The hotel associations and pubs, after not been able to get relief from the court, have moved to the ministry. Due to number of injunctions, they are not able to play several hit numbers during the new years eve.
The Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion from Ministry of Commerce and Industry, has sent letters stating that the meeting is scheduled under the Chairmanship of R K Soni, under secretary to Government of India.
