International Nurses Day: Time to Pay Respect to the Angels of Compassion

New Delhi, May 12, 2020: Every year on May 12, the world observes International Nurses Day to pay tribute to the white-robed angels whose selfless services save millions all across the globe.
The world this year saw how the nurses even risked their lives to save the victims of COVID-19. Some even have laid down their lives for the sake of humanity, thus coming to be known as Corona Warriors.
According to the International Council of Nurses (ICN), the theme of this day this year is “2020 - Nurses: A voice to lead - Nursing the World to Health.” The theme selection is very appropriate as it is the nurses whose healing touch saves millions of the sick world over.
The ICN selected May 12 as International Nurses Day in 1974. This day was chosen to celebrate the birth anniversary of the founder of modern nursing, Florence Nightingale. The nurses, a symbol of peace like the white dove, are unsung heroes, who risked their lives to save others.
As it does every year on this day, the ICN announced it would distribute the International Nurses Day Kit containing educational and public information materials for the use by nurses all across the world.
This year’s International Nurses Day is very significant firstly in the light of expressing our gratitude to the nurses for their frontline services across the world to serve those afflicted with Corona Virus. They were at the forefront of the global war against COVID-19.
The second significance is that year’s International Nurses Day is the fact that the ICN is celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale.
The World Health Organization has requested for it to mark the bicentenary of Florence Nightingale. This will be the year of “Shine A Light” to remember Nightingale.
