Six Tips to Get Your Child Excited About Going Back-to-School Devanshi Dholakia, Brand Lead, BIC Cello

Struggling with a nervous child ahead of the of the first day of school after a long summer break? Here’s an easy guide to making the entire process seamless.

While many parents might be excited and relieved about the Back-to-School (BTS) season, children may not necessarily share the same sentiment. Having to return to a classroom following a fun summer might feel stifling.  Devanshi Dholakia, Brand Lead at BIC Cello, shares some ideas around how to make Back-to-School season fun for kids and seamless for parents.

1. Turn Back-to-School shopping into a fun game: Most parents are familiar with the last-minute dash to the stationery shop for pencils, pens, geometry boxes or brown wrapping paper for textbooks in the run up to a new school year. Why not turn that mad scramble into a game? Give your child a checklist of items that you need to buy and see how many they can collect and deposit in a shopping trolley within five minutes. You could also challenge them to find the cheapest supplies in the store or have a “mock debate” in a grocery aisle. Give them two minutes to research and then have them debate which pen is better; the smooth Cello Butterflow that would help them write exams faster or the Cello Maxriter which would help them write without putting pressure on their fingers and wrist?

2. Create an attractive goodie bag: Why not make this year’s back to school shopping a bit more special by encouraging children to make their own Back-to-School bundles? Putting together a goodie bag of stationery supplies they can use all year long, such as pencils, personalized pens, highlighters, an art book, and water paint will help get them excited to go to school every day.

3. Throw a Back-to-School party: Another way to get your child excited for a new year is to throw them and their friends a Back-to-School party. You could have the children dress up in the colours of their school houses and play games like Teacher, TeacherPictionary (the category could be ‘Things found in a classroom’); or their own version of a Hogwarts Letter. Celebrating with their friends before school starts will make them look forward to a new school year.

4. Meal preparation: The morning rush can take away from the fun of preparing a beneficial breakfast meal with and for your children. Involve your kids over the weekend to prepare ready-to-eat meals for the whole week. Have them choose some of their favourite foods to include in their tiffin boxes. They can even help with buttering sandwiches. This will help make feel involved, responsible, and excited for the week ahead.

5. Make homework more exciting: There’s nothing a child dreads more than having to do homework before the school year even starts. The good news is that you can get them excited about learning with a simple hack. If you know your children are going to learn about different animal species or the life cycle of a butterfly in the new year, take them to a zoo so they can learn about it first-hand. If they’re scheduled to learn about a new place in geography, watch a movie about that place, or visit a museum together if that will support their leaning of a history topic. They’ll be excited to share what they already know and will be more open to learning.

6. Build a creative and fun learning and creativity corner: Create a designated station at home to host your child’s leaning and creativity. Stock up on fun folders, sticky notes, Cello ColourUp colour pencils, and anything else your child might need to brighten up homework time, keep them focused, and foster their creativity and imagination.

Nothing says ‘I am ready and excited for my first day of school ‘more than a fresh set of school supplies. Use the smudge-proof Cello Aqua Gel Pen to help kids customize their new stationery supplies.
