60-Year-Old Woman’s Cervical Cyst Misidentified as Polyp During UTI Procedure at Wockhardt Hospitals Mumbai Central

A 60-year-old woman’s case at Wockhardt Hospitals Mumbai Central underscores the necessity of precise diagnostic procedures in treating chronic urinary tract infections (UTIs). Mrs. Lilavati, with a medical history including diabetes and 15 years of postmenopausal status, presented with persistent UTIs over the past four months. Initial sonography suggested a cervical polyp, prompting further diagnostic exploration.

Dr. Indrani Salunkhe, Gynecologist and Obstetrician at Wockhardt Hospitals Mumbai Central, performed a Dilatation and Curettage (D&C) with hysteroscopy to investigate the suspected polyp. Contrary to expectations, the procedure revealed a 2×2 cm nabothian cyst in the cervix, not a polyp. The infected cyst, which had been misinterpreted as a mass, was successfully drained, and subsequent hysteroscopy confirmed a normal uterine cavity.

Dr. Salunkhe remarked, “This case highlights the critical need for thorough diagnostic evaluation, especially when dealing with chronic UTIs in postmenopausal women. The nabothian cyst, which initially appeared as a polyp, underscores the importance of detailed cervix and vaginal examinations to uncover underlying issues that may contribute to recurrent infections.”

The patient’s ongoing care will now focus on addressing any underlying factors contributing to her UTIs, aiming to prevent future occurrences. This case not only reinforces the value of accurate diagnostics but also emphasizes the need for comprehensive examinations in providing effective patient care.

This case at Wockhardt Hospitals Mumbai Central serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of accurate and thorough diagnostic practices in the management of chronic conditions. By addressing the misidentified nabothian cyst and confirming the normalcy of the uterine cavity, the hospital’s team was able to provide targeted treatment and relief for the patient. The case exemplifies the hospital’s commitment to precision and excellence in healthcare
