Wockhardt Hospitals Mumbai Central Observes Alarming Rise in Heart Issues Among Youth: A World Heart Day Series Call to Action

Mumbai, 18th October 2024 – Wockhardt Hospitals Mumbai Central has treated several young patients with severe cardiac conditions, highlighting an alarming trend of heart-related issues among the youth. As part of the World Heart Day series, the Hospitals urges early detection and lifestyle changes to combat the rise of heart disease in younger populations.
In a series of recent cases, Wockhardt Hospitals treated individuals as young as 29, 34, and 36, suffering from heart attacks. Lifestyle factors like smoking, stress, poor diet, and obesity have emerged as key contributors.
Case 1: 34-Year-Old Shahbaaz Khan
Shahbaaz Khan, a heavy smoker with a non-vegetarian diet, presented with a 95% blockage in his main coronary artery. Dr. Parin Sangoi, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Wockhardt Hospitals, successfully performed a Primary Angioplasty in Myocardial Infarction (PAMI), placing a stent to restore blood flow. Dr. Sangoi commented, “This case demonstrates the severe impact of smoking and unhealthy eating habits, which can lead to life-threatening conditions, even without traditional risk factors like diabetes or hypertension.”
Case 2: 29-Year-Old Omkar Waghdare
Omkar Waghdare, only 29, suffered a heart attack triggered by obesity and high stress due to a business collapse. Weighing 105 kgs and experiencing prolonged mental stress, Omkar had a 95% blockage in his coronary artery. Dr. Sangoi performed a life-saving angioplasty and noted, “Stress and obesity in young individuals can accelerate biological aging, making them more prone to cardiovascular diseases. Early detection and timely intervention were critical in saving Omkar's life.”
Case 3: 36-Year-Old Vijay Shinde
Vijay Shinde, aged 36, a patient with long-standing, uncontrolled diabetes and hypertension, presented with a heart attack and a decrease in heart pumping function. Angiography revealed a significant blockage with thick blood clots. Dr. Sangoi performed an angioplasty and emphasized, “Long-standing, uncontrolled diabetes and hypertension can have life-threatening consequences, as seen in Vijay's case. It serves as a reminder that consistent management of these conditions is crucial for heart health.”
The growing number of young patients with heart conditions at Wockhardt Hospitals reflects a disturbing trend. “Lifestyle factors such as poor dietary habits, smoking, obesity, and stress are becoming primary causes of heart disease among youth,” stated Dr. Sangoi. “It is vital that young people recognize these risks and take proactive steps toward healthier living.”
Dr. Virendra Chauhan, Centre Head, Wockhardt Hospitalss, Mumbai Central, added, "This alarming rise in heart issues among younger individuals is a wake-up call for all of us. We need to prioritize preventive healthcare, encourage regular check-ups, and promote awareness about heart-healthy living, particularly for our younger generations."
As part of the World Heart Day Series, Wockhardt Hospitals urges the public to prioritize early detection and regular health check-ups to identify heart conditions before they become critical. Regular screenings, especially for those with lifestyle-related risk factors, can save lives by enabling timely medical intervention.
