Ranchi, June 11, 2019: Amway India, the country’s largest FMCG direct selling company, has been accorded with the ‘Best International Company in Skill Development’ award at the ‘ASSOCHAM National Summit-cum-Awards on Skilling India – 2019’, held at Ranchi. Mr. Saryu Rai, Food, Civil Supply and Consumer Affairs Minister and Mr. C. P. Singh, Minister of Urban Development, Housing and Transportation, Jharkhand presented the award to Mr. Chandra Bhushan Chakraborty, Vice President – East, Amway India amidst top leaders from the government.
The award recognized Amway’s recent most initiative to partner with the Retailers Association's Skill Council of India (RASCI). The initiative is a part of Amway’s broader vision of empowering its direct sellers with credible Government recognized certification as ‘Individual sales Professional’, based on National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF) from National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC). Till date, Amway has trained and certified more than 11,000 direct sellers as Individual Sales Professionals. Amway plans to train and certify 51,000 direct sellers by 2020.
In alignment with the Indian Government’s ‘Skill India’ initiative, Amway has been significantly contributing towards skill development and nurturing entrepreneurship in the country by focusing its training strategy on enhancing skills and competencies of its direct sellers. The company conducts more than 18,000 training sessions annually. Additionally, Amway has also developed a comprehensive digital learning portal to enhance the skills and knowledge of its direct sellers.
Receiving the award, Chandra Bhushan Chakraborty, Vice President–East, Amway India, said, “Micro entrepreneurship and self-employment through skill development are key priority areas for the Government of India. In line with this, we have aligned our training strategy to provide appropriate tools and training to our direct sellers to enhance their competencies and skills. Our association with RASCI is one such initiative to get our direct sellers certified by a Government recognized body and I am very happy today that this initiative has been recognised at a prestigious platform like this.”
Mr. Bharat Jaiswal, Regional Director, Bihar and Jharkhand, ASSOCHAM, the apex chamber of commerce congratulated all the awardees in the field of skill development and said, “Considering the magnitude of the requirement of skill development in the country, public-private partnerships will go a long way in raising the skill levels in India.” He extended special gratitude to Amway as the Presenting partner and further added, “I am pleased that Amway is supporting the efforts of the Government in skill building.”
According to the World Bank Report, it is estimated that more than eight million jobs are required every year in India as the working-age population continues to increase by 1.3 million every month. On the contrary, only 7 million jobs are being created annually in the country. There is a huge employment gap that needs attention. To address this, Government of India is driving entrepreneurship and self-employment through its skilling initiative. Amway India too has aligned its strategy with the Government’s agenda and has encouraged more than 5.5 lakh individuals to take up entrepreneurship as a way of living. With zero capital investment and no burden of manufacturing, a direct seller can build his own business with Amway.
Looking at the exponential growth of India’s youth population, and with nearly two-thirds of the population under the age of 35 years, the growing young workforce in India will soon be the largest and youngest of the world. It is estimated that only 4.69% of the total workforce in India has undergone formal skill training as compared to 52 percent in the US, 68 percent in the UK, 75 percent in Germany, 80 percent in Japan, and 96 percent in South Korea**. The absence of adequate training channels in the country limits people from entering the workforce to acquire skill training and certifications. As a result, a majority of the workforce gains skills through informal means which go unrecognized across formal platforms and industries. This also restricts them to explore any formal employment opportunities.
*RASCI is an autonomous industry-led body that is chosen by National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) that is responsible for creating National Occupational Standards (NOS) for retail industry, developing competency framework, conducting Train the Trainer (ToT) and Assessor (ToA) Programs, conducting skill gap studies, and assessing and certifying trainees on the curriculum aligned to the National Occupational Standards.
