Article 44 of the Indian Constitution states that Uniform civil code for the citizens, the State shall endeavor to secure for the citizens a uniform civil code throughout the territory of India. Thus, the demand in itself is constitutional.
“Asserting that the aim of the Constitution makers was to gradually and consensually move towards a common civil code for all citizens in the future, Saffron Think Tank demands the Centre to implement the Uniform Civil Code at the earliest”, says Siddhant Mohite, Founder of Saffron Think Tank.
The Uniform Civil Code, according to Saffron Think Tank, involves having a common set of laws governing marriage, divorce, succession, and adoption for all Indians, instead of allowing different personal laws for people of different faiths.
The need for a Uniform Civil Code as envisioned under Article 44, has been reiterated from time to time by the Supreme Court, the group highlights, adding that the youth of India belonging to various tribes, castes or religions, or communities who solemnize their marriages ought not to struggle with issues arising due to conflicts in various personal laws, especially with regard to divorce and marriage.
Founder of Saffron Think Tank, Siddhant Mohite said, “1.5 Lakhs is just the start, we’re aiming at getting 1 crore signatures on this petition. We hope Hon’ble Prime Minister and the Central Govt pays attention to this demand at the earliest.”
Saffron Think Tank is working on-ground too, towards the goal of educating people and spreading awareness of the Uniform Civil Code and its significance.
