WICCI Health Care Council advices early diagnosis and treatment for PCOS and Endometriosis

21st  December, KolkataWomen Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (WICCI) hosted a virtual discussion on “All you want to know about PCODS and Endometriosis” with renowned gynaecologist Dr Sarbani Ghosh. The session highlighted the reasons for PCOS and endometriosis, early symptoms, whether they are genetically inherited and their treatment. The session also pointed out why young women are having  PCOS. The virtual discussion was moderated by Ms. Soma Chakraborty, President of WICCI Healthcare Council, West Bengal Chapter.

In this perspective, Dr Sarbani Ghosh commented, “PCOS is a prevalent condition found in 6-10% of the female population in developed countries. The awareness of PCOS should be increased especially to the younger girls leading an unhealthy lifestyle including smoking, poor diet, and lack of exercise. Medicines can control the situation but will not be able to cure it. If we do not diagnose or treat in early stage it can lead to Uterine Cancer or Endometrial cancer. Lifestyle modification is the most important treatment for PCOS. Endometriosis can be treated by medicines and surgeries.”  While discussing on the factors causing PCOS, Dr Ghosh also sated “Environmental factors are considered to play a role in the pathogenesis of PCOS. Genetics also play a momentous role in the origin of this disease.”

Both Dr Sarbani Ghosh and Ms. Soma Chakraborty discussed the problems and ways of  treatment for these diseases. Younger women having PCOS suffer from irregular periods, obesity and experience male body patter hair growth. Elderly women face infertility and miscarriage. Women with PCOS have high risk of developing diabetes, high blood pressure, and other health complications. The primary symptom of endometriosis is pelvic pain and often associated with menstrual periods.

Ms. Soma Chakraborty, President of WICCI Healthcare Council, West Bengal Chapter commented, “An increasing number of women in the reproductive age are suffering from PCOS. In India approximately one out of five (20%) women suffer from PCOS. It is not a disease but a condition that manifests itself in different ways. Women must get them treated early if they find any symptoms of PCOS and endometriosis. Counselling is a very important for patients suffering from endometriosis.”

The session also highlighted the reasons why PCOS are more prevalent in Indian subcontinent rather than European countries and the chances of increase in PCOS post pandemic.
