Zynova Shalby Hospitals celebrates World Heart Day by training Policemen on how to save life by CPR Procedure

29th September is celebrated as World Heart Day every year to raise awareness about heart disease, and how you can prevent it. Heart disease has become a pandemic in India. As per experts Indians have 2-3 times higher chances of heart disease than western population. It is estimated that India will witness highest cardiac disease related deaths in world by 2030, and every fourth death will be related to heart disease. We have also seen that heart disease rate is increasing in young population in India. This is an alarming situation. Major risk factors for heart disease are high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, being overweight & obesity, unhealthy diet and lack of physical activity

Zynova Shalby Hospital, Ghatkopar celebrated in a novel way with a theme of Dil Dhadkne Do. The aim was to raise awareness about the prevalence of heart disease and to train Policemen to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (known commonly as CPR) if someone close to them loses consciousness and stops breathing due to heart attack. CPR is an emergency procedure which consists of chest compressions combined with mouth to mouth breathing in an effort to keep blood flowing to the brain and other organs until further help, like ambulance arrives. A special event was organized at the hospital wherein more than 25 policemen participated. Zynova Shalby heart specialists Dr. Mukesh Parikh, Dr. Amit Java, Dr. Rishabh Parikh and ICU in-charge Dr Avanti Bhave trained people on performing CPR during this event.

Dr Mukesh Parikh said, “We organized this event to raise awareness about the magnitude of heart disease among people and how we can save someone’s life by performing CPR. CPR can be performed when someone stops breathing during heart attack or in other situations too like drowning. I am very happy that policemen who are always on high alert participated in this event in huge numbers.”

Cardiac Surgeon Dr Amit Java said, “We see many patients even from younger age group coming with heart disease. Unhealthy diet and lack of exercise besides other factors are responsible for this in most cases. It is very important that people learn CPR procedure so that they can save someone’s life.”

Zynova Shalby Hospitals Unit Head Mr. Reny Varghese said “Although the training was intended at Policemen, relatives who were at the waiting area also joined in with enthusiasm”. Mr. Varghese reiterated that training on CPR will be a continuous activity at Zynova Shalby Hospital to train maximum people on how to perform CPR.
