Shri Ram V. Sutar Awarded the Dayawati Modi Foundation Award


The Dayawati Modi Science Foundation has conferred the Dayawati Modi Foundation Award for Art, Culture and Education to Shri Ram V. Sutar. 
Ram V. Sutar served in the Department of Archaeology from 1954 to 1958 as a modeller for restoration work of sculptures at the Ajanta and Ellora Caves, where he restored many of the sculptures. Then he joined the Department of Audio-Visual Publicity, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, New Delhi as Technical Assistant (Model) in the Exhibition Division. In order to become an Independent professional sculptor, he left his government job in 1959.
His first noticeable work was the 45-feet Goddess Chambal sculpture (also known as Chambal Monument) at the Gandhi Sagar Dam in Madhya Pradesh. One of his most well-known works is the bust of Mahatma Gandhi, which is recognised worldwide. The Government of India presented it to Italy, France, Germany, Russia, England, Argentina and many more countries. He has also sculpted a 16-feet high sculpture of Mahatma Gandhi in Meditation pose, which has been installed in the Parliament House, Delhi and Gandhi Nagar, Gujarat. Another notable work is the 21-feet high Equestrian statue of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, which was installed at Amritsar in Punjab.
Ram V. Sutar is the recipient of many awards and honors. In 1999, he was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India, and in 2016, he was honoured with Padma Bhushan Award. He also received the Tagore Award in October 2018.
In recognition of his immense contributions towards Indian art and culture, the Dayawati Modi Foundation has the privilege to bestow upon him the Dayawati Modi Award for Art, Culture and Education 2018.
The award has been instituted in the memory of late Dayawati Modi, wife of industrialist late Rai Bahadur Gujar Mal Modi, founder of the Modi Group. Dayawati Modi Foundation Award
Previous recipients include Amitabh Bachchan, The Dalai Lama, Mother Teresa, Asha Bhonsle, Pandit Ravi ShankarProf Lokesh Chandra, Tyeb Mehta and Pantdit Jasraj among others.
The award has also gone international with recipients including singer Goldie Hawn and recently British screenwriter Simon Beaufoy who wrote the screenplay for the Oscar winning film 'Slumdog Millionaire'.
