CSMIA witnesses rise in arrival of domestic passengers during Unlock 3.0

Mumbai, September 09, 2020: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) is witnessing a steady growth in the passengers arriving at the airport. When domestic flight operations initially resumed on May 25, 2020, CSMIA had observed more passengers departing out of the airport and travelling back to their hometowns. With the rising trend of business travel as the purpose of flying, the airport has observed growth in arriving passengers since August 1, 2020.

Since the resumption of commercial domestic flight operations, CSMIA has catered to a total of 47 sectors in the country operated by 10 airlines. With the economy slowly picking up and Mumbai re-opening with the ‘New Normal’, the airport has witnessed over 237,200 passengers at arrival as compared to approximately over 170,600 passengers at departures since the commencement of Unlock 3.0. Furthermore, CSMIA recorded the emergence of Delhi, Varanasi and Hyderabad as the top three cities with the highest arrivals of over 51,200, 19,700 and 16,100 passengers respectively during the same period. In comparison, the airport registered approximately over 108,500 arriving and 162,800 departing passengers approximately under the unlock 2.0 in the month of July 2020.

A survey conducted at CSMIA revealed a shift in the purpose of travel with the trend of business travel gaining momentum over returning to hometowns or visiting the family. With passengers finding air travel to be a more reliable mode of transportation, the study further revealed high passenger satisfaction and confidence with the safety measures undertaken by the airport.

CSMIA continues to strictly follow safety measures at the airport as laid out in the SOPs laid out by the regulatory bodies along with supporting government agencies in their process to curb the spread of the virus. In compliance with the updated guidelines, currently, all the domestic passengers have to undergo a 14-day home quarantine upon arriving in the city. In case of an onward transit or departure from Mumbai within 7-days of arrival, they will be exempted from quarantine if they produce a confirmed ticket of their return/onward journey.
