La Traviata

Opera Screening

In a remarkable career spanning six decades in theatre, Giuseppe Verdi composed 26 operas, at least half of which are at the core of today’s repertoire. Verdi’s La Traviata survived a notoriously unsuccessful opening night to become one of the best-loved operas in the repertoire. Following the larger-scale dramas of Rigoletto and Il Trovatore, its intimate scope and subject matter inspired the composer to create some of his most profound and heartfelt music. The title role of the “fallen woman” has captured the imaginations of audiences and performers alike with its inexhaustible vocal and dramatic possibilities—and challenges.

Tessa is a young, brilliant barrister. She has worked her way up from working-class origins to be at the top of her game, defending, cross-examining, and winning. An unexpected event forces her to confront the lines where the patriarchal power of the law, burden of proof and morals diverge. Prima Facie takes us to a place where emotion and experience collide with the rules of the game. Justin Martin directs this solo tour de force, captured live from the intimate Harold Pinter Theatre in London’s West End.
