Mumbai 8th August: Ex English Cricketer Mike Gatting who played form 1977 to 1995 captaining in 23 test matches between 1986-88 was in town for the launch of Fortune Turners written by Aditya Bhushan and Sachin Bajaj which was held at the Royal Bombay Yacht Club on Thursday.
Published by Global Cricket School, Fortune Turners takes one back to an era when Indian spinners ruled over the best batsmen in the cricketing world. When every state team had a spinner who was knocking on the doors of the Indian Test team. It took the genius of Bishan Singh Bedi, Erapalli Prasanna, Bhagwath Chandrasekhar and Srinivas Venkataraghavan to keep the rest out of the Indian team. These four were referred to as the ‘Spin Quartet’ and together they spun India to many victories in the 1960s and 1970s. They took 853 test wickets in 231 matches between them. India has always been known as a land of spinners, but the volume of impact that these four had on Indian cricket is just incomparable. Neither before them nor since their playing days, have four spinners been a part of the scheme of things for an international cricket team. Interestingly, the four of them played just one test together. Fortune Turners it is a homage to the geniuses who were the architects of numerous glorious Test victories.
Speaking at the launch Mike Gatting Said, I am glad to be here to honour these 4 great spinners from this medium. I have had many memorable trips in India and especially I fondly remember my tour here in 85’. The people here are really passionate about their cricket and I wish we could have more of that in the UK”
When asked about his encounters with the Quartet he added, “ I have played Bishan Singh Bedi in the past and I remember him always smiling even under pressure. I remember hitting him for a boundary in the first ball and he just gave me his signature smile and went on to take my wicket a couple of deliveries later and sent me off with the same smile. I did get a chance to interact with Prasanna or Chandrashekar but I had the good fortunes of meeting Srinivas Venkataraghavan during our umpiring stints and got to learn a lot from him”.
