USIBC Awards the Global Leadership Award to Shyam S Bhartia and Hari S Bhartia of the Jubilant Bhartia Group


Washington D.C., June 13, 2023: The U.S. India Business Council (USIBC) presents the Global Leadership Award 2023 to Shyam S Bhartia, Founder and Chairman, Jubilant Bhartia Group and Hari S Bhartia, Founder and Co-Chairman, Jubilant Bhartia Group in recognition of their exemplary contribution towards strengthening U.S.-India partnership over the last three decades.  

The award was presented by Chief Guest Ambassador Taranjit Singh Sandhu, India’s Ambassador to the United States, at USIBC’s India Ideas Summit held at Washington D.C., USA on June 13, 2023.  

Started in 2007, the annual Global Leadership Award by USIBC recognizes top corporate executives from India and the United States who have showcased extraordinary contribution, achievement and commitment towards strengthening the US- India partnership.  The previous winners of the Award include Natarajan Chandrasekaran, Chairman, Tata Group and Jim Taiclet, CEO and President, Lockheed Martin, Uday Kotak, CEO, Kotak Mahindra; Gautam Adani, Founder and Chairman, Adani Group; Sundar Pichai, CEO, Google; Jeff Bezos, Founder, Executive Chairman And Former President and CEO, Amazon; Adena Friedman, President and CEO, Nasdaq and Fred Smith, Founder and Chairman, FedEx Corporation. 

Ambassador Atul Keshap, the President of USIBC, spoke on Shyam and Hari Bhartia’s achievements: “The Bhartia brothers have not only steered their conglomerate to impressive heights but have also etched an indelible mark on the Indian industrial landscape. Their story stands as a testament to the power of visionary leadership and the unique dynamism of family-run enterprises in India. Their saga of success serves as a beacon for aspiring entrepreneurs, illuminating the path from humble beginnings to global recognition. “ 

Speaking on the occasion, Shyam S Bhartia, Founder and Chairman, Jubilant Bhartia Group and Hari S Bhartia, Founder and Co-Chairman, Jubilant Bhartia Group said, “We are honored and humbled to be recognized at this platform, which celebrates the strong connection between the world’s two largest democracies. India and the United States stand strong on several shared ideologies, and this will be a pivotal partnership in defining the coming decade. Shereen Bhan, Managing Editor, CNBC-TV 18, moderated an insightful panel discussion with Shyam S Bhartia and Hari S Bhartia on the summit theme- “Engaging India with Trust, Resilience and Growth”. During this session, the panelists spoke on how companies can scale up in India and the importance of providing value to consumers. 

Headquartered in India, Jubilant Bhartia Group is a multi-sector conglomerate with operations worldwide.  Shyam S Bhartia, together with his brother Hari S Bhartia, is the Founder and Chairman of Jubilant Bhartia Group (www.jubilantbhartia.com) headquartered in New Delhi, India. Shyam is the Chairman of Jubilant Pharmova Limited, Jubilant Ingrevia Limited and Jubilant FoodWorks Limited. He is also Chairman and Managing Director of Jubilant Pharma Limited, Singapore (a 100% wholly-owned subsidiary of Jubilant Pharmova Limited).  

Shyam holds a bachelors’ degree in commerce from St. Xavier’s College, Calcutta University. He serves on the Board of Chambal Fertilizers and Chemicals Limited, India and is the Chairman of FICCI Singapore Council.  He was also a Director on the Board of Air India. 

Shyam has been associated with various institutions and has served as a Member of the Board of Governors, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mumbai and Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad. He has also served as a Member of the Executive Committee of the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) & Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and was also a member of the Task Force on Chemicals appointed by the Government of India.  He is a regular participant at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos and is also a member of Governors for Chemistry and Advanced Materials of the World Economic Forum. 

Shyam S Bhartia has also been a strong proponent of Corporate Social Responsibility. He, along with Hari S Bhartia, established the Jubilant Bhartia Foundation (JBF) - the CSR arm of the Group. The CSR efforts of the Group are directed towards community development with a focus on Primary Education, Basic Healthcare services and Livelihood generation programs. Mr. Bhartia has also been deeply involved in the ‘Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award - India’, a joint initiative of Jubilant Bhartia Foundation and Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship, to recognise promising and successful social entrepreneurs in India.  

His immense contributions have been recognised by various awards. CHEMEXCIL conferred Lifetime Achievement Award to him.  He, along with his brother, was felicitated with the Entrepreneur of the Year Award at the prestigious AIMA Managing India Awards, presented by the President of India, and also shared the much-coveted Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award for Life Sciences & Consumer Products category.  The Jubilant Bhartia Group companies have been recognized with various prestigious awards for excellence in corporate social responsibility, environment management and corporate governance. 

Hari S Bhartia, together with his brother Shyam, is the Founder and Co-Chairman of Jubilant Bhartia Group (www.jubilantbhartia.com) headquartered in New Delhi, India. Hari is the Co-Chairman, Non-Executive Director of Jubilant Pharmova Limited, Co-Chairman and Whole-Time Director of Jubilant Ingrevia Limited & Co-Chairman of Jubilant FoodWorks Limited. 

A Chemical Engineering Graduate from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi, Hari was conferred the Distinguished Alumni award by his alma mater in 2000. He has been associated in various capacities with the IIT system and with the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. 

Hari is a former President of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) (2010-2011) and a member of several educational, scientific and technological programs of the Government of India. He is a former Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Raipur & Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur. He is currently Member of the International Advisory Board of McGill University, Canada; Chairman of Board of Governors, Indian Institute of Management, Visakhapatnam and Chairman of CII-Jubilant Food & Agriculture Centre of Excellence.  

Hari is a member of several CEO Forums & prominent being the India-USA CEO Forum and India-France CEO Forum. He is a regular participant at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos and is a member of the World Economic Forum’s International Business Council; Community of Chairpersons; Global Health and Healthcare Governors Community; Family Business Community. He was the Co-Chair of the Davos Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum in 2015. Hari is also a Founding Member of Centre for Social and Economic Progress (CSEP). 

Hari is a strong proponent of Corporate Social Responsibility. He, along with Shyam, established Jubilant Bhartia Foundation, whose efforts are directed towards community development with focus on Primary Education, Basic Healthcare services and Livelihood generation programs. He is also deeply involved in ‘Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award - India’, a joint initiative of Jubilant Bhartia Foundation and Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship, with an objective of recognizing promising and successful social entrepreneurs in India.
