Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport Crusades For A Greener Tomorrow

The GVK led Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) managing the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport is one of the best single runway airports in the world. Pride of the island city, CSMIA constantly endeavors to provide the best experiences to the passengers travelling via Mumbai. Standing tall, CSMIA takes pride in its vision and mission to own, develop and operate an airport that reflects the true heritage of India and the spirit of Mumbai. The airport conforms to the highest standards of safety and security through its efficient and easy to use facilities exceeding customer expectations while simultaneously creating value for its stakeholders. Highlighting its core values based on integrity, respect and passion for excellence, the performance driven teamwork at CSMIA ultimately emphasizes on being consumer centric.
As an environmentally and socially conscious corporate, the airport operates in a sustainable manner. Sustainability is at the helm of GVK MIAL, and as a crusader to promote green and sustainable environment, CSMIA has undertaken numerous pioneering and impacting measures. This is evident through the various proactive interventions such as achieving level 3+ of carbon neutrality, undertaking various emission reduction, energy conservation, noise abatement measures, etc. CSMIA is proactively involved in taking concerted efforts towards community development through various programmes for a greener tomorrow.
Catering to over 48.83 million passengers annually, the airport is constantly growing manifold as compared to the previous years. With the ever increasing passenger traffic, CSMIA has taken several measures to tackle airport congestion to optimize the aircraft turnaround time. As part of these initiatives, CSMIA started measuring the time taken for each activity carried out by the airline, which included AME establishing contact with the pilot, connection of aerobridge to the aircraft, passenger boarding and de-boarding, catering, loading and un-loading, aircraft fueling, and cleaning. These collaborative efforts have resulted in improved airport On-Time Performance (OTP) with an increase of 12%. The airport since 2014 has accounted for substantial growth in Air Traffic Movement and has reduced its Runway Occupancy Time (ROT) from 65 seconds to 47-49 seconds now. Through CSMIA’s pioneering initiatives like ‘Common Use Self Service (CUSS)’ kiosks, elimination of boarding pass stamping at domestic SHA, T2, mobile application to shop, explore and order food meals online, the airport is easing the way people travel via Mumbai.
Be it emissions, energy, noise, water, air quality, waste, or even biodiversity or wildlife management for that matter, Mumbai International Airport has checked all the boxes in maintaining and monitoring a proper system. These efficient and green practices adopted by CSMIA not only makes it one of the most sustainable airports in the world providing nothing but the best for its passengers today for a better and sustainable tomorrow. All this stands testimonial to that fact that our very own Mumbai International Airport has been the pioneer in green initiatives in the airport infrastructure space on a global level and being the busiest single runway airport in the world, which is quite an achievement to be proud on this World Environment Day!
