Amrita School of Engineering, Coimbatore‘s National Science Olympiad- It’s all about society and its issues


Coimbatore, July 19 2019: Society and the various issues revolved around it is always a matter of concern to the public at large. In its endeavour to find a solution to tackle these issues, Amrita School of Engineering Coimbatore has come up with a unique national level competition for school students implementing science and technology.
The second edition of the National Science Olympiad (NSO) and Young Scientist Conclave  will be held at the Amrita School of Engineering, Coimbatore on October 30 and 31, 2019 is aimed at tackling these issues. The Theme for this edition is “Smart City: Sustainable Solutions for a Self-Sustaining Future”.
The topics include Smart Waste Management, Smart Water Management, Renewable EnergyDisaster Prevention & Warning Systems, Smart Farming & Agriculture, Smart Pollution Management, Smart Health Care, Artificial Intelligence for Common Man, Robotics for societal benefit and integrated multi modal transport system. In a nutshell the topics cater to issues related to water, electricity, agriculture, pollution, health etc.
 The NSO is a team science project competition for the school students where higher Secondary and High School students exhibit their ideas using their talents and creativity. The purpose of the Olympiad is to provide a platform where student teams from various schools around the country get a chance to showcase their innovative concepts or working models relating to specified topics. Any ideas to solve any societal problem using science and technology that aligns with the theme are considered for submission.

The Olympiad comprises of two categories namely High School (Classes 7 – 9) and Higher Secondary School (Classes10 – 12). Registrations for the competition got underway from July 4  upto September 5, 2019. The winning teams will be awarded cash prizes. The inaugural edition held last year was great success with 50 teams selected from 115 registered teams with 170 participants across the country.

Over the years, though it’s Amrita Live-in-labs programs, Amrita University has introduced opportunities through real life experiences which is aimed at bridging the gap between the academia and Industry to secure job to its engineering & management students.
The Amrita Live-in-Labs® program aims to expose youth to problems faced by rural communities in India. Through experiential learning opportunities, participants put theory into practice by generating innovative solutions, thereby facilitating critical and collaborative problem-solving abilities of participants.  Amrita Live-in-Labs® is a multidisciplinary experiential learning program that facilitates the research, development, and deployment of sustainable solutions for current challenges faced by rural communities in India. The program is designed to engage participants in a mutual learning and sharing experience by breaking classroom and lab barriers to implement theoretical knowledge to address real-world problems. The program allows participants to study, observe, and interact with rural populations while living in rural communities to gain a better understanding of challenges in the areas of Health & Hygiene, Education & Gender Equality, Waste Management & Infrastructure, Energy & Environment, Agriculture & Risk Management, Livelihood & Skill Development and Water & Sanitation.
