Prabhāvan
The students of the residential Programme in Arts and Sustainability at
Shankaraa, Kanakpura Road put up a grand show at the finale of the workshop today
Sunday, 5th of May, 2019 – 6 PM
Shankaraa witnessed a grand finale by students from lower income areas, who took part in Prabhavan 2019 edition of the annual summer program held at their site.
This year, over 150 gifted DRIK-Jeevanotsava children from lower-income backgrounds across Karnataka who were part of the Prabhavan at the Shankaraa Foundation put up their finale show and it was breathtaking.
Prabhāvan is the 2019 edition of the annual summer residential program held at Shankaraa, during which over 150 participants between the ages of 8 and 18 come to Shankaraa from different lower-income areas, to learn different art forms, develop creative and life skills, and interact with artists, workshop facilitators, and other children and young adults of different backgrounds. Shankaraa has been the proud host of these summer programs for the last 15 years. Over the last 6 years, these programs have been conducted along with the Jeevanotsava team of the DRIK (Dwaraknath Reddy Institutes for Knowledge) foundation, under the leadership of Anita Reddy.
THE VISION
At Shankaraa, we believe that creativity is an important aspect of holistic growth and development, and a critical part of any individuals personality, across any profession or vocation. Unfortunately, most children are encouraged to stick to mainstream decisions. They are often pushed to get conventional degrees in the hope of gainful employment as a means out of difficult situations. While these children may have tremendous talent and potential, they are not encouraged towards art and creativity.
Overall, the intent of Prabhāvan is simple: to provide meaningful training (both arts and sustainability) in a holistic, sustainable way, in the hope of developing creative young individuals who approach their futures with energy, empathy, innovation and hope.
Of the 150 children with us this year, 70 of an older age group are to be trained in artistic, inter-disciplinary and holistic ways, towards forming a professional performing team that showcases the folk forms of Karnataka. It is our hope and endeavour that the resulting ensemble will be able to travel and perform, allowing the young artists to interact with members of their community and be a means to provide some income to help them towards a formal education while nurturing their cultural roots.
Swacha Parisara – Themes Around Environment
This year, Prabhāvan is expanding its scope to include themes around environment, nature, and sustainability. The Giving Tree workshop is designed to encourage children to understand their connection with nature; the force that nurtures and nourishes us.
A CELEBRATORTY VALEDICTION
In addition to vocational training and the sessions on sustainability and environment, all program participants will, as always, be trained by talented visual, performing, folk and theatre artists in different art forms, skills, and sustainability. The culmination of this workshop will be a joyful convergence of dance, music and theatre showcasing the talent and indomitable spirit of these children in two beautiful productions THE GIVING TREE and CHELUVA KARNATAKA.

The SHANKARA FOUNDATION in association with DRIK FOUNDATION has worked tirelessly to plan, strategise and execute this programme, in the hope that it will make a positive and meaningful impact into the lives of children who very often don’t find the right kind of encouragement towards reaching their individual potential.
